Headmasters ReflectionsHeadmaster's Reflections

Dear Community

Welcome back to the start of another school year. It is always great to see our boys return and bring back the heart and soul to our College. Speaking to staff and parents across the three sub-schools the first week appears to have gone very smoothly; especially where it matters in the classroom. I have no doubt there would have been some hidden challenges but then again there always are in such a large and vibrant college environment.

The tone and benchmark for the start of the year was well and truly set by our Parents Association Welcome Back BBQ. This came on the back of the work put in across the whole weekend from our boarding staff in transitioning our boarders back after their break. I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to Ian Knobel and his dedicated team for delivering such a great welcome back function on Sunday 31 February. Having discussed this event with a lot of people, I am in no doubt that the use of the area outside of the Year 10-12 Boarding house was a real winner and will become our preferred option moving forward.

During last week I attended parent evenings where it was great to see so many returning and new faces. As Headmaster one of the major things I ask from all of the community is that we ensure we look after our new families during these initial settling back in weeks. I can still remember my first week at Scotch and how welcoming the community was and just what this meant to my own family. Engagement makes a huge difference for all of us when we start at somewhere new. To our new families I urge you to meet your class and year representatives and get involved in your son's journey. Furthermore, become engaged with your Scotch Auxiliary and Parent Association meetings and activities. I know we are all busy but the more you get engaged with the Scotch community, the more you will realise just how special Scotch can be.

As we start a new year it is worth reinforcing that most successful organisations are those that keep the channels of communication open and streamlined. The school management structure of each sub-school is identical in that there is a Head of School, Dean of Teaching and Learning and Deputy of Administration and Pastoral. In Residential Life the structure is identical however, there is a Director of Residential Life instead of Head of School. The first point of contact for all parents should be the person who can give you the quickest direct answer. In the first instance this is very often the classroom teacher or in Senior School the subject teacher. In essence if you are unsure who to contact then call the administrative support staff at the respective sub school and they will ensure your query is handled efficiently and effectively through getting the most relevant staff member to get back to you. In a world where we now over use email and SMS due to convenience, an in-person chat or question can in many cases result in a far better outcome as opposed to a string of reply all emails.

Finally, if you are reading this message you have already made the correct start regarding College communication. The Thistle, in conjunction with any specific sub-school communications, is a critical part of our how our families keep abreast of what is happening. Over the course of a year it is extraordinary just how much occurs across our College. If in doubt just ask us for help.

On a personal note, if you are a new family and see me out and about either at the College or in the community, come up or say hello. This goes for returning parents who already have shown their willingness to have a chat over last weekend at various events.

Have a great start to the term and I look forward to catching up with you throughout the course of the year.

A Culture of Distraction

At the commencement of 2016 teaching staff engaged in a professional development exercise where they analysed students' individual perspectives on learning, which were captured on video in 2015.

A clear generational difference emerged in the research; we now have within our classrooms, a generation who cannot remember life without the Internet.

Previously, we were able to reminisce about the use of encyclopedias and the frustration when another student had the letter you needed to use; we can remember when you needed to reserve a book in the library only to return weeks later when it was your turn to read it. The reality is, that all of our students forever more will have the 'internet of everything'.

The concept of the 'internet of everything' is when access to the Internet has permeated all aspects of our lives until it becomes an assumption that it will just be there.

Let me say from the outset, that the culture of distraction is a P-12 problem, not one that resides in the Senior School alone.

This message to our community is not to highlight the negatives of this, rather to illustrate the knowledge we need to possess to ensure we maintain a positive balance in the lives of our boys.

I believe that we live in a culture of distraction. Furthermore, at times, that distraction can have a negative affect on learning. We are seeing a steady rise in what only can be deemed an addiction to gaming, streaming of live content and passive Internet use, that is, receiving information rather than creating it.

Unfortunately, distraction is a worsening condition, the more distracted we are, the more distractible we become. As stated by American author, Ed Schlossberg, 'Paying attention to anything will be the missing commodity in the future life. You will think you'll miss nothing, but you'll probably miss everything.'

The College is committed to working with our community to ensure that our students have the ability of self-control when it comes to their Internet usage. It would be a simplistic answer to block all content of this nature; as fast as we can block the content, new content is created or a way around the block is established. We also do not want to teach students to swim by not letting them in the pool; the reality is that in our goal to prepare boys for life, we need to ensure that we equip our students with the ability of self-control beyond Year 12. The culture of distraction is also not one that belongs only to Scotch College; it is a problem within society, for adults as much as our children.

A first step is to raise awareness of the problem regarding distraction; we need to educate our boys, both at school and at home with the help of our community. In a multi-billion dollar industry, which uses similar methods to gambling to attract and retain users, the gaming world is a powerful distraction.

The message is not to stop students engaging in the hobby of gaming. Far from it, the message is to speak to your son regarding the perils of becoming addicted to gaming to the detriment of his studies. Unfortunately, this can occur from a very young age with games designed from the moment a thumb can swipe an iPhone.

In 2016, we shall be providing more information regarding the culture of distraction and working with families to ensure they are supported to achieve a sensible balance. If families feel that they already need to alert our teachers of a possible distraction, it would be great to openly communicate that with the staff at the College as a first step.

In April Scotch College is hosting a Round Square Conference for students aged 12-14 years. We are expecting 150 delegates from schools within our Australasia and East Asia region. The conference is organised around the Round Square IDEALS: Internationalism; Democracy; Environmental Awareness; Adventure; Leadership; and Service.

The service activity will focus on homelessness, with participants rolling 'Street Swags', packing comfort items and fresh food at the 'Food Rescue' base and then distributing the packs to the homeless clients of the UnitingCare West, Tranby Day Centre.

We are seeking donations of new comfort items including, tooth brushes and paste, underwear for both sexes, soap, moisturizer, shampoo and other toiletries - in fact…any small item that you feel would be useful for homeless people of Perth sleeping rough or in temporary accommodation.

Please drop donated items at any of the sub-school receptions.

Disabled Surfers Event: Great Start To The Year!

The first Disabled Surfers Association event for 2016 took place on 30 January. This was supported by over 20 Scotch Year 11 and 12 boys who volunteered their time before school commenced. This was an outstanding turnout and the organisers continue to be impressed by the contribution from Scotch College boys and staff.

Head of Junior SchoolJunior School

Head of Junior School

I would like to welcome the Scotch community to the 2016 academic year. I want to thank the parents who were able to attend the Meeting the Teacher Evening on Wednesday 3 February. As part of my presentation I shared what drives and guides me as an educator and school leader.

My Philosophy of Education

  • All children have an equal right to excellent education
  • Developing strong and effective partnerships with colleagues and parents
  • Developing strong basic skills in our students in an engaging, challenging and differentiated learning environment
  • Consistency in our approach across the Junior School

My philosophy has been developed through my experience in both the UK and Australia. In the UK, I worked in very challenging schools in challenging areas. I saw a great deal on inequitably in terms of the quality of education. I also saw the need for children to be given the best opportunities possible. I learned then, and firmly believe now, that the provision of the best possible education by excellent teachers is the right of all children. I have worked throughout my career to provide that for the students in my schools.

My moral purpose is what drives me each day and is what I aim to achieve as a Head Teacher. I am fortunate to have a staff of outstanding educators to assist me in achieving my goals. My Moral Purpose reads as follows:

To develop an institution that provides outstanding inclusive education for the whole child. To develop strong basic skills, the arts, sport and most importantly developing good, kind, engaged, able young people. To prepare students for their future by developing the skills they will need to compete in a global economy. To develop and empower colleagues to be able to deliver the best educational outcomes for every student.

We have set are goals for this year. They are focused around improving the quality of teaching and learning in the Junior School. They include:

  • To fully embed a transdisciplinary and inclusive approach in our teaching and learning programme.

We will be bring more inquiry learning to our stand-alone areas i.e. maths, and will more effectively link our reading and writing programmes to our units of inquiry (UOI). We will run a combination on direct instruction programmes through the Leveled Literacy Intervention and Extending Mathematical Understanding programmes and in class support. We are reducing the frequency of withdrawal and working towards a more inclusive model for assisting boys with their learning.

  • To continue to use assessment for learning (planning, differentiation, formative assessment, success criteria and plenary) in all teaching and learning activities.

Assessment for learning was a main area of professional development in 2015. We implemented the sharing of specific learning intentions for most lessons and units of work. We develop success criteria for and with the boys so they to knew what they needed to do to succeed in their learning and to demonstrate their understanding. We worked on using effected formative assessment strategies (daily, ongoing assessments) to assist us in tracking the boys' understanding of the concepts we had been covering and to use the information to ensure we differentiated the boys' learning. This was extremely successful. We will be further developing this in 2016. Differentiation will remain a major part of our teaching and learning focus. Ensuing we have the correct level of challenge for all boys.

  • To ensure data is used to inform teaching and learning (differentiation).

We collect a significant amount of data on the boys through the Maths Assessment Interview, Allwell Assessments, Fountas and Pinnell reading assessments, spelling data, writing moderation and pre- and post-tests. We want to make even better use of that data to assist in our programming, grouping and differentiation.

  • To establish Pre-Primary as an example of best practice in early years pedagogy and in the integration of Reggio Emilia and IBO PYP programmes.

Fifteen boys began with us in Pre-Primary last week. Our Pre-Primary programme will follow the Reggio Emilia approach as well as the PYP inquiry based learning in a transdisciplinary model. We will incorporate other examples of best practice i.e. Montessori fine motor skill and mathematics development, to make our Early years an example of best practice in the region.

  • To develop the boys' higher order thinking skills.

We will be looking at the research of Dr Barrie Bennett to develop the boys' higher order thinking skills. The importance of develop higher order think skills is clear. We need our boys to be able to think beyond simple retention and relaying of information. We currently work to develop thinking skills through the PYP approaches to learning. The work we will undertake this year and next will be to assist the boys to think more often at the top levels of Bloom's taxonomy (analysis, synthesis and evaluation). We will do this by looking at our teaching methods and techniques, our questioning and the activities and inquiries we plan. Our goal is to achieve even deeper learning, retention and transfer of knowledge.

  • To further develop STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

75% of future jobs will need STEM related skills requiring:

◦ Innovate thinkers

◦ Problem solvers

◦ Team players

◦ Collaborators

◦ Creativity

◦ System thinkers

◦ Good communicators

We will provide opportunities for the boys to engage in full day collaborative STEM challenges. This will compliment the work we currently do through STEM activities in existing UOIs and in the introduction of robotics into the Junior School in the past few years. Our work in STEM will improve our transdisciplinary learning, link closely to UOIs and provide boys an opportunity to develop a range of skills in a multi disciplinary challenge.

The video below shows an example of what these activities could look like.

Other developments for 2016:

  • Dianne Rigg Spelling in Year 1 to 3
  • Works Their Way Spelling in Year 4 and 5

Engaging with Parents:

  • Morning Teas - Will continue with the agenda being sent one week in advance.
  • Parent Engagement Workshops -Programme is being finalised but will include:
    • Loose Parts Play. We will be looking at the importance of play in a child's development and working with Emma Lawrence for Natural Play Solutions. Parents will be invited to a morning and evening workshop to play and assist us in writing a policy on play.
    • We will be working with a dietician and sports personality to promote healthy eating amongst boys and to talk with parents.
    • STEM workshop
    • Protective behavior workshop
    • Our regular Keynote speaker evening in May

We appreciate that not all parents will be able to attend PEWs and assemblies due to work commitments. We will be videoing the sessions so parents can view them at home. We also now have the facility for parents to view assemblies through live streaming.

The importance of independent reading

Anderson, Wilson, and Fielding (1988) led one of the most extensive studies of independent reading in which they investigated the relationship of reading time to reading achievement. The study found that the amount of time students spent reading independently was the best predictor of vocabulary development and reading achievement gains.

The research indicates that independent reading is probably the major source of vocabulary acquisition beyond the beginning stages of learning to read. Students who read more can learn the meanings of thousands of new words each year.

Art News

It is useful when starting a new year to reflect and remind us about the importance and potential of learning through the Arts and of the Arts. The International Baccalaureate programme mirrors quite a few skills on this list, including - top of the list here - Creativity. The overall theme for the upcoming IPSHA Exhibition this year is "Creativity is Contagious…Pass it On!"

Over the year, I look to make authentic links and meaningful connections with artists and community events, such as 'Sculptures by the Sea' in March. A great local resource is you, the parents and Scotch Community. I would like to extend an invitation to you to become involved in the Art Programme here at Scotch in whatever capacity you like - from rotating parent help rosters, to sharing any particular interests or expertise, joining a small group of parents that could meet fortnightly to assist in preparation for Exhibitions or managing bigger projects, or simply joining in an art class with your son when you can.

Feel free to contact me if you are interested in engaging with the Arts or have particular skills (like sewing etc), ksabitay@scotch.wa.edu.au , or let your new class representative know.

Performing Arts News

Using their holiday adventures as inspiration, the boys have begun their Performing Arts classes with a drama activity inspired by the book The Truth About My Unbelievable Summer by Davide Cali and Benjamin Chaude. It follows the story of a boy, whose lazy day at the beach turns into a round-the-world adventure, courtesy of his clever teacher. It has been lovely to catch up with all of the boys and hear a little about their summer break, and to be reminded of how vivid their imaginations are! I am always taken aback by the enthusiasm and confidence the boys display in Performing Arts. It has been a fabulous start to what is going to be a very exciting year.

Friendly Schools and Families

Welcome all to 2016 at Scotch College. I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing time during the past Christmas holidays and am ready and charged for an action-packed 2016. Although I am starting this year with a somewhat blunt article, I feel it important for all parents, students and staff to be aware of Scotch Colleges' definition of what does and does not constitute bullying-type behaviour based on the work of the Friendly Schools Plus team of experts.

What is bullying?

Bullying is when one or more of the following things happen AGAIN and AGAIN to someone who finds it hard to stop it from happening again.

Bullying is when a person or a group of people offline or online (mobile phone or Internet):

• Make fun of / tease someone in a mean and hurtful way.

• Tell lies or spread nasty rumours about someone to try to make others not like him/her.

• Leave someone out on purpose or not allow him/her to join in.

• Hit, kick or push someone around.

• Deliberately damage, destroy or steal someone's things.

• Threaten or make someone feel afraid of getting hurt.

It is NOT bullying when:

• Teasing is done in a friendly, playful way.

• Two people who are as strong as each other argue or fight.

iPads and Laptops in the Junior School

There is great excitement in the Junior School as the new boys in Years 2 to 5 have received their iPads and laptops and were able to start using them on their first day last week.

We are ensuring 21st Century learning for our students with our 1:1 device programme.

Effective use of the iPads and laptops have

  • increased independent and self-initiated learning among students
  • increased student motivation and active engagement in learning
  • improved teachers' capacity to plan for and meet individual student needs
  • led to an improvement in student learning outcomes
  • extended students' learning beyond the classroom

The boys have amazing support structures to help them manage their devices. We have the 1Degree staff to assist the students and teachers directly when issues arise. 1Degree is situated in the new Middle School and Junior School Library and is open between 8 am and 4pm.

This Tuesday 9 February will be a very exciting day for the Year 1 boys. Boys and parents will attend their iPad rollout session, detailing all of the important information about using and looking after their new devices.

We will run Parent Education Workshops (PEW's) throughout the year to help parents navigate the iPads and laptops as confidently as their sons do!

We look forward to updating the community with the amazing ways the boys are using their iPads and laptops to enhance their learning.

French

Bonjour et bienvenue! Welcome to a new school year. It has been lovely seeing the boys in French lessons and hearing that some of them managed to use their French during the long summer holiday - how wonderful to know they have the opportunity for French in action! This week, our classes have been working hard on designing an Essential Agreement for use in our French lessons. While examining the attributes and attitudes of the IB, the boys have identified key elements that are so important in the language classroom, such as risk-taking, communicating, cooperating and confidence, all make a big difference to how often any language learner will be able to contribute. I am delighted to say that the boys have a really strong commitment to active French use in class, whether it be to sing a song, complete a partner activity or to try something more difficult, like a new sentence or question-answer game, our boys are active linguists in every lesson. Au revoir.

Junior School Resource Centre

Welcome back to the new school year. It is great to see your sons back and so eager to learn. The Library is open for boys before school from 7.45am and after school until 4.00pm. During this time, boys are welcome to do homework, read quietly, borrow books or seek IT support from our talented team of 1degree staff (start time for this team is 8.00am). The library is also open at lunchtime for boys to read, or play lego or board games.

Each class has a structured lesson in the library with me once per fortnight. These lessons support the Unit of Inquiry in the classroom. At this time boys have the opportunity to borrow books for recreational reading and research tasks. It is important that boys bring a library bag to this lesson to protect the books from drink bottle and lunch box spills in their school bags. Library bags are available from the Uniform shop or boys can use an old conference bag, shopping bag or similar.

Each Thursday morning after drop off we have a group of parents (mainly mums but dads and grandparents are very welcome) who come in and cover new books. This is a great way to get to know other parents in the school, find out what is happening around the College and see new resources as they come through (borrowing welcome!). This runs through to about 9.45am. Coffee & tea provided. This year, our Library Service Specialist Emma Murdoch will be coordinating this session. All warmly welcome.

Enjoy the term - before we know it, it will be Easter!

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

IB PYP Curriculum: Welcome back to our 2016 school year

Welcome back everyone.

Our new staff started on Thursday 21 January and all teachers were officially back in action on Thursday 28 January.

The teaching team has started our professional learning for 2016 with a 4-hour session presented by Helen Edgeberg (Brinsden Professional) as part of our ongoing work relating to Assessment for Learning. We will follow this up with further sessions with Helen throughout the year.

For our new parents: In 2003 the Junior School was authorised to implement the Primary Years Programme (PYP). The PYP is a curriculum framework that guides our structures and pedagogy to ensure we are all working towards the same purpose of developing boys who can be life long learners and active global citizens. We are also striving to develop boys who reflect the Scotch Mission Statement:

"To develop boys of character with a strong self-understanding, a passion for sustained learning and spiritual learning who will become valued members of the global community".

An information session for parents new to Scotch College Junior School and the Primary Years Programme will be held later this term and more details will be distributed shortly.

Head of Middle School

It has been a remarkably smooth commencement to the school year. Your support behind the scenes, particularly last year around the Orientation visits has really helped facilitate this - thank you. To the parents who stayed and answered questions for new parents over a cup of tea last Monday, this was invaluable, thank you.

Two very important support groups at Scotch College are the Parent Association and the Scotch Auxiliary. The Welcome BBQ on Sunday 31 January was an excellent example of the work these organisations do for us all. There was a great turnout and the opportunity to meet many of the Boarding families was also appreciated. Additionally the Scotch Auxiliary with its links into each of the sub schools, provides a valuable support mechanism as well. The welcome morning tea in Middle School and the chance to meet new parents and get 'old' parent perspectives on the complex life that is Scotch was greatly appreciated. Both of these organisations survive on a rotation of parents who volunteer their time in these groups, to provide new energy and share the load.

I anticipate a really positive year with your sons. A big focus for us this term is for your son to feel welcomed, knowledgeable about what is expected of him and confident to begin developing the important social and academic relationships that will sustain him this year. I look forward to seeing many of you this week at our Parent Information Evenings.

Community Service Focus

Following a general and casual invite on our first day back, thirty boys bought their lunch, enthusiasm and ideas to a voluntary meeting on Tuesday and discussed how they could support the kids and people of Yarloop and Waroona following the fires there this summer. There was no shortage of thoughts on how to raise money but the general consensus was to go a bit deeper and whether we, a group of Middle School students, could actually do something ourselves. Whilst a second hand book sale, a cake stall and a free dress day have now been factored into the calendar this term with the hope of generating some money to use in a project, we have also been in touch with Landcare and a number of projects with them are being discussed. It hasn't taken long for our boys to recognise and shoulder the responsibility that comes with our core values of service and stewardship. More information on this initiative will be distributed as it unfolds.

Middle School Inter-House Swimming Carnival

One of our major House Sports events is the Middle School Swimming Carnival, to be held next week, Tuesday 16 February at HBF Stadium (formerly Challenge Stadium) in the outdoor pool closest to McGillivray ovals. Students are to be dropped off by 8.30am at which time attendance will be taken, and picked up from the pool. Traffic is something to be aware off at these times. Entry and parking at the rear of the stadium coming in off Brockway Ave will be useful. The program commences at 9.00am with our final event at 2:45pm. We ask that for collegiality, and as commitment to the House culture, boys arrive on time and stay for the entire day.

Inter-School Debating (WA Debating)

Registrations for the WADL Interschool Debating competition are now open. Year 7/8 boys wishing to register should pick up a registration form from Middle School Reception. There will be an information session held on Tuesday 9 February at 8.00am in Miss Mullin's classroom for those boys who would like more information on WADL.

The WADL competition is generally held on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings between 6:30pm and 8.00pm at CCGS, Shenton College or other schools in the area. There are five rounds of debates that are held fortnightly from Week 7 this term (Summer) and through next term (Autumn), with the finals being in Winter term. Boys should form teams of 4-5 students. Please indicate the names of boys in your team if known, otherwise boys will be assigned to a team by Middle School staff. WADL is only open to boys in Year 7 and 8 and they will compete in the Novice category. Registrations close at the end of Week 2 - Friday 12 February. Weekly study sessions will commence in Week 3A every Tuesday from 7.30am - 8.30am.

From the Head of Senior SchoolSenior School

From the Head of Senior School

Welcome back after what I hope has been an enjoyable and restful break for all boys and their families. I extend a special welcome to our Year 9 boys and their families as they join us in the Senior School this term.

Over the summer break we had a group of boys travel to India as part of a Scotch College Community Service Tour, while boys in the basketball programme travelled to the United States to compete in a basketball tournament. In late January we also had boys in a training camp for the upcoming rowing season and a Scotch College cricket team toured New South Wales playing against teams from a number of large Independent Schools from NSW, Victoria and Queensland. I have no doubt that the year ahead will be filled with equally impressive experiences, challenges and opportunities that will have us all looking back at 2016 in awe of what the boys have achieved.

While the opportunities that lie ahead for boys, in and out of the classroom, are numerous, they remain only opportunities unless boys are willing to 'have a go', accept challenges, aim high and make mistakes. It is amazing what can be achieved by focusing on the task at hand and doing it as well as it can be done. If boys repeat this simple approach with everything they do they will achieve things they never thought possible. The time for boys to set goals is now.

I look forward to watching the boys pursue opportunities across a broad range of fields as they make the year ahead one filled with highlights and rewards.

Thomas Gallagher (Year 12, Anderson) was selected in the Open Interstate Team to compete at Torquay and Fairhaven in Victoria in early January for Surf Life Saving WA.

Riley Walker (Year 11, Shearer) was selected in the U17 Interstate Team to compete at the Manly and Freshwater Carnivals in Sydney in late January for Surf Life Saving WA.

Aidan Read (Year 12, St Andrews) re-signed with Eurasia Motorsport to compete in this year's Formula Masters China series. Aidan placed first in all three Formula 3 races held in the winter pre-season race meet at the Sepang International Circuit.

Mitchell Atkinson (Year 12, Alexander) - Duke of Edinburgh Award (Silver)

Mitchell undertook challenges and commitments in water polo, leadership, reading and driving. This included a European Water Polo Tour with his club team. The Service component of the Award was completed in preparation for and while experiencing the school's tour of India in December. Mitchell raised a significant amount of money and wrote an extensive report on his experience. An excerpt from Mitchell's report sums up the value of going outside ones comfort zone and looking to assist others.

Summer Uniform

Ties - Summer Term

Boys in Senior School need not wear ties to school during Summer Term except on Friday for Marching and Assemblies.

House Braid

So that each boy may be identified by his House when ties are not being worn, boys wear appropriately coloured braid on the pocket of Summer uniform shirts. Strips of braid in House colours are available from the Uniform Shop. The braid should be stitched along the top edge of the pocket.

Mouthguards

It will not be long before the winter sport season is upon us, or at least the commencement of training, and with this in mind it is time to again think of mouthguards. The College strongly recommends that all students wear mouthguards for both training and competition in all contact sports. A custom fitted mouthguard will not only protect teeth but has also been proven to reduce the incidence of oral soft tissue injury, jaw fracture, neck injuries and concussions. Parents are welcome to make private arrangements however for those who prefer, the College is able to offer the following service:

A highly experienced dental prosthetist from Galadent will be attending the Senior School for Years 9, 10 and 11 on Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 March. Year 12s on Wednesday 24 February.

The mouthguards will then be made up and distributed to the boys later in the term.

It is essential that both attachments to this newsletter concerning mouthguards are completed in full and returned to the College by Wednesday, 17 February 2016. NO late forms will be accepted. DO NOT include payment details as requested in Step 3 of the order form - merely complete the second attachment "Mouthguard Permission Form" and the cost will be charged directly to your school account.

Year 10 Personal Project

The Year 10 Personal Projects are well and truly underway and there are some intriguing ideas being developed. While the Personal Project is an ongoing process, students should have completed their planning stage and have well developed designs. Many will be fully involved in the creation of their product. It is important for all students to be actively working on both their products and their reports. Students must also document all stages of their process, including research, in their Process Journal.

Individual Personal Project meetings are scheduled for Weeks 2, 5 and 8 during Summer Term. As always, details of meetings can be found on the Personal Project noticeboard outside the Senior Library and boys are encouraged to check this board for updates. These meetings are also listed on the Personal Project website: https://my.scotch.wa.edu.au/year10/personalproject/meetings.

Students must also check their school email accounts regularly as this is the most efficient way for Supervisors to contact their students. It is an expectation that the boys respond to all communications from their Supervisor, even if its just to acknowledge receipt of the message.

This term, conferences will focus on guiding students through the report criteria and drafting the first three sections of their report. The Personal Project team wishes the boys the best of luck this term as their projects really start to take shape.

Senior Library News and Updates

The Senior Library has been very busy over the break with the installation of the new International Open-Mindedness world news display. This upgrade was made possible by the Parents Association and library and the boys would like to thank the parents for this. The TV units will be displaying news from different regions of the world including Russia, Japan, Asia Pacific, BBC World News and the Americas. This will allow boys to see how news is reported and importantly, where it is not reported. The concept of this is based around the TED talk given by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie called 'The Danger of a Single Story'. This can be watched from this link http://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story?language=en

One of the changes that I would like parents to know about is the new library charges policy. Students who have an overdue book for more than a term (three months) will now keep the book and a charge will be added to the family account. The reason for this is that the library will have already replaced the book or resource, as they are needed for other boys across the College. The full policy can be found on ask.SCOTCH (available from the home.SCOTCH site) along with the new Challenge Policy, the Weeding Policy and Gift and Donations Policy.

Finally, parents and students can get an update on the Middle School and Senior School events from their respective webpages available from http://home.scotch.wa.edu.au

If you have any questions please contact library@scotch.wa.edu.au to get a prompt response.

1Degree News and Updates

Over the holidays the 1Degree team have been busy getting new laptops ready for those students in Years 7, 9 and other groups. This has all progressed smoothly with the process finishing this week. The Tech Centre and 1Degree are available to answer any questions you might have in relation to technical issues. A reminder also that the new service of ask.SCOTCH (http://ask.scotch.wa.edu.au) is now available and has many answers to general questions for the community. Where you feel an answer does not match, please submit a question and we will respond within one working day.

The Senior School (Years 9 to 12) Inter-House Swimming Carnival will begin at 9.00am and finish at 1.00pm on Wednesday 10 February. There will be no classes in the afternoon. There will be no sport training for Year 9s to 12s in the afternoon unless instructed by coaches. Training in the morning is as normal.

Each individual boy can only swim in two individual events and one relay with the focus of this event on participation.

Boys are expected to wear Scotch bathers or blue PE shorts. They may also wear a Scotch rash vest if they wish. They will not be allowed to swim if they do have the correct clothing.

There are no false starts with boys simply being disqualified at the end of the race should they break at the start.

Sunscreen for each house will be provided and please encourage students to wear Scotch hats and to apply sunscreen before they arrive at HBF Stadium. There is limited shade for spectators so parents and friends attending the carnival should bring a hat and apply sunscreen as well as stay hydrated. Parents are not permitted onto the pool deck.

Entry is from the McGillivray Oval side of HBF Stadium as with previous years and parents are required to pay an entrance fee of approximately $3.40.

Day boys are expected to make their own way to HBF Stadium.

Buses will depart from the middle school bus bay on Shenton Road at 8.15am for boys who have training before school and for all boarders.

Boys can go home at the conclusion of the carnival from HBF Stadium. Buses will transport any boys back to school if they cannot get home from the stadium and boys returning to school have the option to undertake private study in the BRC until 3.25pm, where they will be supervised for the afternoon.

Support Groups

Parents Association

The Parents Association was very pleased to provide a Family Welcome BBQ for current and new Scotch families last Sunday (31 January) on the grounds in front of the Boarding House. There was an excellent turnout with over 800 sausages, buns and equivalent salads consumed by the hungry boys, siblings and parents. The PA Committee and Scotch catering staff were kept very busy on the BBQ's and serving refreshments at the bar.

Feedback received was that the new venue and a new inflatable obstacle course were a hit with families. We believe that the Welcome BBQ is an excellent way to kick-start the New Year at Scotch. We will work on additional quantities for next year and look at new ways to improve the interaction between new parents and other parents in the same year groups. The focus on House Groups for Senior School boys was a great success and we thank the House Heads and School staff who gave up their time to assist.

At the end of last year the PA approved two significant projects that we believe would enhance the boys experience at Scotch and forms part of our technology focus for 2016. The school has now installed both of these initiatives during the Christmas break.

Four ATV screens and motorised blinds were approved for installation in the School Dining Room at a cost of $69,000.

Live streaming of News and information was approved for addition to the Bunning Resource Centre at a cost of $17,000.

We encourage you to inspect both of these initiatives and hope you and your family can enjoy them throughout the year. The dining room will be particularly busy hosting sports functions over the coming months.

With the coming Scotch Year 12 Ball at the end of February we wish the Scotch Auxiliary well in their massive preparation and work is underway to support the Ball Muster afterwards.
