Headmaster's Reflections

Welcome back to Spring Term. I trust all families took the opportunity to spend invaluable time with each other. In a rapid paced world, quality family time can suffer at the hands of getting tasks done and by adhering to an unrealistic set of commitments. If you were considering getting more balance back into your life then why not start now?

It is hard to comprehend that this week marks the change of school year for our Year 9, 10 and 11 students who all commence their new academic year by moving up a grade. Commencing the new year in October is something that sets us apart from many other schools. While it does present us with some challenges, this strategy is aimed at maximizing teaching and learning opportunities for both students and staff.

Of course the big event last week occurred on Friday when we bid farewell to our Year 12 students at March Out. This event is a highlight on the school calendar. Not because we say farewell to the Year 12s, but because it is one of the few times in a year when our whole School comes together. We do so because we want to say thanks and wish the Year 12s farewell. For our young boys it provides yet another great moment for them to experience aspirational achievement as they watch our Year 12s March Out and commence the first stage of their post school journey.

As we commence another term you may have noticed that there have been changes to some of the surrounding streets, especially Wright Avenue. This work was all driven by the Town of Claremont Council. I would like to take the start of a new term to remind the Scotch community about our role within the wider community with regard to both delivering and collecting the boys from school. Blocking up small surrounding streets such as Saunders, Bellevue and Gardener is not a good example of community mindedness. It is also dangerous in terms of student movement and access. Our neighbours need to be able to get in and out of their properties and streets. If you are coming by car then I ask you to drop your son at the major drop-off zones we have created on Claremont Crescent, Stirling Road, and Gooch Pavilion. Even better, drop the older boys off a bit further away and encourage them to walk as opposed to having to drop them at the door. In general we have been very good trying to make drop-off and pick-up times as smooth as possible. Sometimes I believe we face unrealistic expectations of neighbours as well. However our job is to minimise local concerns and continue to be valued members of our community.

I look forward to all that this term will hold across our three sub schools. Spring term is always busy, culminating in the annual Junior School Presentation Morning and Middle and Senior School Speech Nights. Thanks for the support I know you will give to the boys and their teachers throughout the balance of this year.

Starting last Friday you may have noticed Scotch advertsing in the local press for interest in Pre-Primary students. Our intention is to open one Pre-Primary class commencing in 2016 given we receive enough interest and formal approval from the Department of Educational Services regarding the proposed teaching space. I ask parents to let anyone they know who may be interested in seeking a Pre-Primary place for 2016.

Below is a preview of some of the advertising:

I look forward to catching up with the boys and their families throughout the term.

Have a great fortnight

Community and Service

Community Service-Based Projects

Once again the Year 10 Personal Projects were outstanding. Many of the projects focused on service with boys working to support various agencies in creative ways. These include:

  • Lewis Walker (Year 10, Anderson) - Undertook a fudge fundraiser for donation of educational materials for Thai school
  • Benjamin Moran (Year 10, Anderson) - Raised money for the McGrath Foundation through a 'Pull on Your Socks' - Scotch/Christ Church rugby match.
  • Benjamin Avery (Year 10 Cameron) - Created foster-care backpacks
  • Isaac Nancarrow (Year 10, Cameron) - Collected sports equipment for East Timor
  • Austin Bantock (Year 10, Ferguson) - Initiated 'Austin's Ride' to raise funds for the Special Air Service (SAS) resource fund
  • Oliver Harding (Year 10, Keys) - Made 'Oli's Oats' from farm produce and sold to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis
  • Tremayne Green (Year 10, Keys) - Initiated a fundraising social for lung cancer research.
  • Malachi Cornwall (Year 10, Shearer) - Sent aid supplies for Vanuatu
  • Jack Manners (Year 10, Stuart) - Created a golf day for Redkite (cancer charity)
  • Sebastian Evans (Year 10, Alexander) - Created a cycling fundraiser for 'Wheelchairs for Kids'

These are all wonderful projects that demonstrate a desire on the part of boys to make a difference.

Round Square Global Conference

During the last holidays a group of five Year 11 students took part in a Round Square Global Conference in Singapore for six days. The conference was held at the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) and involved over 1000 delegates from 150 schools from all continents. The theme was 'Act Today, Change Tomorrow' and students were challenged to look at ways of creating a more sustainable world.

Speakers included explorer and conservationist Tim Jarvis. Tim spoke of retracing as authentically as possible the famous journey of Ernest Shackelton and his men from Elephant Island to South Georgia. Kavita Ramas, the 'Ford Foundation's' representative for India and Nepal spoke about fighting for woman's rights under very difficult circumstances. Nidhi Kapur from the 'Save the Children Fund' detailed her career and outlined her current work in the Congo. All speakers were alumni from UWCSEA.

The boys took part in workshops and discussion groups with students from all over the world, representing Scotch College very well.

'Upside' Cookbook

Former Scotch student - Cal Foulner - heads up an organisation called Upside Nepal. This group works on sustainability projects in remote villages - often overlooked by other agencies. Upside is promoting another 'Forage' cookbook - following the success of a previous version. If you would like to purchase this cookbook and support a very worthy cause go to the Forage Cookbook web site or follow on instagram.

Music Department

Spring Term commences, the Music Department will be involved in Orientation programmes, the Presentation Assemblies and Speech Nights, plus the last traditional concert of the year, the Junior and Middle School End Of Year Concert. Please note that this event will be held in the Dickinson Centre on Friday 30 October at 6.30pm. Everyone is very welcome to enjoy this free event to celebrate the work of the Junior and Middle School musicians. Specific information will be sent to performers via email. Several Instrumental tutors are also holding instrument-specific Soirees in addition to the main concert to enable their own students to perform to each other in front of families and friends in a smaller setting. These are always enjoyable events.

The change of the Academic Year, in Senior School, (particularly as Year 8 remains as part of Middle School until 2016), enables changes to be made to the co-curricular Music Ensemble Programme. Specific ensemble membership details are still being finalized through weeks 1 and 2, because while Senior School boys have risen one academic year level, sport requirements have not changed. This particularly impacts Year 10 boys who are still playing in Year 9 teams. I appreciate that it takes a couple of days to sort sport commitments and musical ensemble membership and I hope to have any clashes resolved as soon as possible.

Upcoming events include:

Monday 19 October, FOSM Ordinary Meeting and AGM, 7.00pm, Senior Music Department

Friday 30 October, Junior and Middle School End of Year Concert, 6.30pm, Dickinson Centre

Many of the events listed above are supported by FOSM. If you would like to join the Friends of Scotch Music (FOSM) - a group of parents who enthusiastically support the work of boys and staff in the Music Department, the process is very straightforward via the FOSM email below. FOSM meets once or twice each term with all meetings beginning at 7.00pm. Meetings go for approximately one hour, and are held in the Senior School Music Room with everyone welcome. Please consider becoming involved in the FOSM Parent Support group as an excellent way to support your son and the Music Programme at Scotch College. The next FOSM Meeting is to be held Monday, 19 October and will include the Annual General Meeting.

Contact Details

The Instrumental Programme is administered by the Senior School Music Department and all queries should be directed to the Music Administrator, Julia Robinson (9383 6841) music@scotch.wa.edu.au

Alternately, please contact Mr David Coughlan, Head of Music, via email DGCoughlan@scotch.wa.edu.au or phone 9383 6842.

Ships Ahoy

Welcome back to a new term and to the final push to Christmas. The staff and I have been busy preparing for the return of our young friends and we are very much looking forward to the challenges and successes of the final part of the 2015 academic year.

The Junior School finished off the Winter Term with a swash-buckling event the Grand Opening of the new Junior School playground. After one full year of research, design and building, the boys finally had their new playground to explore. 240 pirates, courtesy of our free dress day theme, attended the opening. A coin trail competition between the classes raised $1317.90 for education resources in Tanzania.

The journey to get us to this point was a fine one. After it was agreed that we would build a new playground, Aden Brown and Andre Carvalho from our grounds team, set about researching and designing the space. They spoke with our boys, researched playgrounds from as far away as Norway, and came up a concept plan that immediately got the boys attention. The final plans were outstanding and brilliantly met the brief we had set them. We asked them to design a playground that would challenge our boys physically and would help to develop their strength in their core, shoulders and arms. We asked for a space that would force them to evaluate the risks they would take in their play and plan for these risks. And finally, to design a playground that would excite them in their play. Aden and Andre did just that.

Our new playground is amazing and the boys seem to be thoroughly enjoying their time on the flying fox, climbing to the crows nest, navigating the ropes course and walking the plank. But don't take my word for it. Hear what our boys have to say about it.

I want to thank Dr O'Connell for helping us to get this fine structure and Mr Andrew Bowdrey from Nature Play Australia for building the playground.

The end of the Winter Term saw one of our Year 3 boys win a prestigious competition. Billy Mahaffy entered the 2015 Doodle4Google along with six other Junior School boys. Billy was selected as a winner in the Year 1 - 3 category of a competition that had over 18,000 entrants. Well done to all the boys for their efforts and creativity, and very well done to Billy on his accomplishments. Please see the entries of all the boys below.

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

The PYP Mission Statement and Learner Profile

When looking back through the articles written this year I noted that two key areas of the IB programme were not mentioned. When I write the final article for 2015, I will create a contents page, so should you be interested, you can go back through all articles and collate the information in order of significance, so as to be able to best understand the Primary Years Programme that forms your child learning journey here at Scotch College. The two areas are the IB Mission Statement and the Learner Profile.

Below, I have shared the Mission Statement and listed the Learner Profile attributes. I will expand on these in the following Thistle article. I also feel it important to note that these two areas are at the heart of the IB programme. It starts with a child's first year of the PYP, through the MYP years and right through to the completion of the Diploma Programme for those students who elect the DP in their final two years of schooling.

IB Mission Statement

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end, the organisation works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

IB Learner Profile

The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

The IB learners strive to be:

Inquirers

Knowledgeable

Thinkers

Communicators

Principled

Open-minded

Caring

Risk-takers

Balanced

Reflective

Friendly Schools and Families

Bystander Behaviour Matters

Most bullying takes place when bystanders are present, although most bystanders do not act to discourage it. When a bystander does act there is a good chance (around 50%) that the bullying will stop. Students who are 'defended' are better adjusted and report less peer victimisation one year later. Reconciliation is more likely when bystanders intervene than when teachers intervene. The majority of peer interventions are effective.

Friendly Schools provide support for schools to address the following bystander outcomes:

  • Increase awareness and understanding of the role of a bystander to bullying including Cyberbullying.
  • Increased awareness and understanding of the responsibility to protect other peoples rights, in particular, the rights that bullying infringes upon.
  • Increased intention of bystanders in the target group to take positive, effective and safe action when they witness bullying.
  • Increased target group engagement in help-seeking behaviour.

French

Bonjour everyone. In week 9 of last term, both of our Year 3 classes headed off on a rather tasty adventure - we all went on an excursion to a French café in Cottesloe. Marie Antoinette Café is owned by Sarah Aubault (a Scotch parent) and she has a fantastic area set up for groups, with large tables, French games and - the best bit - access to all of her wonderful, delicious crèpes, croissants and waffles. Our Scotch College gentlemen worked hard in their French lessons in the preceding weeks, practicing their orders from the menu. On the day, 50 boys spent the morning listening to French music and ordering their own choice of fantastic food, using the language in a real-life setting. It was a great day out, made easier by wonderful teamwork from Mme Turkich and Mme Springall as well as a collection of generous parent helpers. Thank you to the boys for showing what wonderful French speakers they are and to everyone else for getting involved and helping to make our morning out such a success.

Physical Education News

Welcome back to Spring Term for all the boys in the Junior School and we look forward to another exciting term of physical exertion and game play. This term the boys will be reacquainting themselves with swimming in Physical Education. Most classes will be doing two swimming lessons per fortnight and 2 normal Physical Education lessons, except for the Year 1 and Year 2 boys who will be preparing for their Aqua Fun Day. These classes will be doing three swimming lessons a fortnight.

The term will also see the completion of the Inter-House Gaelic Football Competition that started at the end of last term. The boys are reminded to bring trainers down to play in on the day of their fixture, and I would recommend bringing water bottles as the temperature starts to climb as we head into another long, hot Perth summer.

There are some days that are quintessential experiences and you know you are witness to a special moment. The shared picture book morning late last term between the Year 2's and 12's was one of these moments. On this day, the Year 12's bring from home their favourite childhood picture book to read to their Year 2 buddy. The Year 2's choose their favourite book from the library picture book collection to share with their Year 12 buddy.

It was a clear demonstration of the importance that books and being read to as a young child has had on many of the Year 12's. They proudly shared with the their Year 2 buddies well worn books, many of these containing language techniques common to picture books, such as repetition and rhyming. The joys and suspense as pages turned was evident in both the young and older boys' faces.

For the adults present it was a tangible reminder not to under estimate the interactions that sharing a book can give. The opportunity for physical closeness and sharing of messages and life lessons that are embedded into the story.

When assisting the Year 2's with choosing books to share with their Year 12 buddy, it was easy to see that some boys had developed favourite titles and authors. During book selection each fortnight, I often ask the boys to choose one item that they think Mum or Dad would enjoy reading with them. This could be a picture books or a beginning chapter book to share. My hope is that the boys are sharing these books with you and creating shared reading memories.

Happy Reading

5W News

Since the end of last term, the boys in 5W have been studying the transdisciplinary theme of 'How the World Works'. Within this, we have identified the differences between biomes around the world and what makes those particular biomes special. We have looked at the flora and fauna within those biomes and shared this using MinecraftEDU. Additionally, the boys have been looking at the planet of Pandora from Avatar. From this, the boys wrote some excellent descriptive pieces using various forms of figurative language as well as their five senses. We are now finishing off this unit of inquiry and the boys are creating a documentary (think David Attenborough but better…) to showcase how organisms have adapted to their surroundings, before moving on to our final unit of inquiry for the year.

From the Head of Middle SchoolMiddle School

Head of Middle School

Welcome back to an exciting final term. The spring weather, a change in uniform and sports, some exciting Outdoor Education activity for our Year 6 and 7 students and Speech Night - a particularly important night for our Year 8 boys- only eight weeks away, have all contributed to an enthusiastic and energetic start to our final term.

Hanging in the entry corridors on the ground floor are the new Middle and Junior School House banners. The finished designs are a collaborative project that has run over the last three years. The new banners draw from the shape of the existing College crest and are in the shape of a shield with a St Andrews cross as a background. Student involvement in the design process began with a competition within Houses to determine an inspiring motto and a motivating symbol for each House. The banners have been made using an applique stitching process, that includes the translation of the Latin motto stitched into the body of the banner in an almost watermark manner. Individually and as a set they look beautiful and I am sure will inspire another level of pride and commitment during House events.

My congratulations to the six boys whose designs were chosen and the special part of College history they are now connected to:

Medieval Times in 8O

At the end of Winter Term, Year 8O participated in the Middle School Medieval Festival, complementing the Humanities unit, The Medieval World. The event featured an interesting display of student work including medieval heraldry and authentic architecture of the time including 3D models of castles, monasteries, peasant's homes and cathedrals. On the night, students also had the opportunity to eat traditional food, watch a fighting display performed by The Grey Company and participate in a variety of experiences that illustrated what it would have been like in the Middle Ages. Activities included trying on armour, exploring different forms of weaponry of the time and partaking in traditional arts and crafts. Year 8O students thoroughly enjoyed learning about the period of history and loved the opportunity to experience some of the modules of their studies come to life.

From the Head of Senior SchoolSenior School

From the Head of Senior School

Spring Term marks the beginning of the new academic year for all boys in the Senior School. The commencement of a new year brings with it a sense of anticipation - new goals and new opportunities. Boys in Year 11 spent time thinking about the year ahead in a two-day conference that included sessions in study skills, leadership, goal setting and achieving balance.

While boys in Years 9 to 11 were thinking about the new academic year ahead, our graduating Year 12 boys were reflecting on the year just passed. Our final assembly was very much a celebration of our Leaving Year 12 boys' achievements and contribution. The assembly included an address from the President of the OSC, Michael Silbert who welcomed all boys in Year 12 to the Old Scotch Collegians - a community for life.

The highlight of the day was March Out before an audience of well over 2000 people. To watch our Year 12s lead the School for the last time made for an emotional and memorable occasion for all in attendance.

Following the March Out, approximately fifty Year 12 boys made their way into the Junior School to spend time with all boys in Year 2. In addition to time spent playing games, dancing and sharing a barbecue lunch with the Year 2s, all boys in Year 2 and Year 12 recorded their aspirations for the future on video to be placed in a time capsule. The time capsule will be opened at the Year 12s' ten-year reunion in 2025, the same year our current Year 2s will be in Year 12. This will be a wonderful occasion where boys in both year groups will be able to reflect on how much they have developed and consider where the next ten years will take them.

Ross House Appeal

The Ross House Appeal was a great success. Over 1000 nappies, 10 tins of baby formula, books, toys and games were donated to the Family Foundations Service at Uniting Care West. We also raised over $380 dollars through a sausage sizzle to contribute to food and fuel vouchers for these families in need. Luana Gomes from the FFS was at school to accept the donations, despite the fact the car was not quite big enough to fit all the items! (The FFS programme provides support to families with children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The programme supports families through providing meals, material assistance, psychological and emotional support, referral, education assistance, advice and information.)

All parents are invited to attend our AGM on Tuesday evening 27 October in the School's Dining Room Annex. Refreshments will be served at 7pm, with a meeting commencement of 7.45pm. Year 10 Chinese Banquet

The Year 10 parent function at the Shun Fung restaurant near the Barrack Street Jetty on 18 September was a great success, with more than 160 parents attending. The event coincided with the showcase of the Year 10 Personal Projects and a celebratory river cruise afterwards for the Year 10 boys, who were joined by Year 10 girls from PLC, MLC and St Mary's. Scotch parents had exclusive use of the restaurant, the menu was excellent and the evening was most enjoyable.

Ms Susan Kennerly, Year 11 PA Representative.

Year 9 Parent Cocktails

The annual Year 9 PA/SA cocktail event was held during the last week of Term Three on 22 September on a beautiful, balmy night. Parents were welcomed by two Year 9 boys playing their bagpipes and the venue was the fabulous new Scotch Gallery. Seventy parents enjoyed delicious canapés prepared by Scotch catering. The guests enjoyed catching up with old and new Year 9 parents, whilst viewing some of the splendid art on display in the Gallery. Three lucky parents were the winners of fabulous door prizes - a good night had by all!

Mrs Melissa Harkins, Year 10 PA Representative.

Year 8 Parent Cocktails

Our Year 8 Parent Cocktail function was a great success, with 64 attending. The venue was the beautiful new Scotch Gallery and, with Middle School artworks still on display, the Gallery worked really well as a venue for our function on 23 September. As always, Scotch catering provided delicious canapés, special thanks to Claire Tuffin and Kelly Carlton in Catering. Thanks to Richard Ledger, Head of Middle School, who handed out the three door prizes won on the night. La Reunion Student Exchange

Bonjour! As you may know, Scotch has a working relationship with WALRSE - the Western Australian La Reunion Student Exchange. This committee of volunteers has been sending students to Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean since 1983. French students from Perth have the possibility to travel from Perth to Reunion Island in the July holidays, staying one month in a host family where they are immersed in the French language and way of life and often make life-long memories. As Scotch student Bailey Banfield says: "I had a wonderful time and it was heaps of fun. It's a great opportunity to learn more about another culture, and one which I loved."

The Reunionaise students then travel to Perth in our summer break, arriving mid-December and staying one month, practicing their English the whole time they are here. Due to the popularity of the exchange, we sometimes have a large number of French boys looking to travel, and it can be difficult to find host families amongst the somewhat smaller collection of male French students in Perth.

This is the situation we find ourselves in this year, so WALRSE are putting out a call to see if any Scotch families (particularly with sons in the 16-17 year age range) are interested in hosting a French exchange student this summer. The families can be host-only, without the need for boys to be studying French or intending to travel in July. We are looking for families who feel they can commit to 4 weeks of hosting, or if that is not possible, for a two-week hosting period to be shared with another family.

This year's hosting period is from December 20 to January 17 and includes three compulsory attendance activities:

  • The welcome day out at Adventure world on December 22 (host-only families would have their tickets to that provided free, plus the chance for additional tickets for friends to be bought at our reduced group rate)
  • The group picnic on December 30 (bring along a picnic and join all the exchange participants for a morning of river-side relaxing)
  • The river cruise on the 14 or 15 of January (an evening event, again, the hosting child and their guest would have their ticket provided for free)

Aside from those three events, it is hoped that host families will share christmas with their student, give them plenty of opportunity to practice their spoken English, and will show them the delights of Perth or even WA.

WALRSE are offering a small financial contribution to host families to thank them for their generosity in opening their homes to a Reunionaise student.

If you feel that you would like to host a boy this summer, please contact Madame Vinton, French teacher in the Junior School, on this email address: csvinton@scotch.wa.edu.au.

Merci.

Ms Carolyn Vinton

PLC Centenary Open Garden Day

The Scotch College community is warmly invited to the PLC Centenary Open Garden Day on Friday 30 October. This year, 10 beautiful and diverse gardens will open their gates to the public for a rare glimpse at some of Perth's most magnificent private properties.

Several of the talented gardeners and landscapers who have designed and maintained the gardens will be available on the day to answer questions.
