There are many times throughout our school year when we are provided with a perfect vignette into life at Scotch. The last couple of weeks were just such a time. With all of our formal winter JPSSA and PSA sporting activities complete, the College turned its attention to our Inter-House Athletics Carnivals. Congratulations to all of the students from Years 1 -12 and staff for making the three house athletic carnivals such a great success. It is very gratifying to see the three sub-schools participate with such enthusiasm. It is also fun to watch the intense House rivalry that the boys enjoy so much. Last Friday our Athletics Quad team had a resounding victory against CCGS, Guilford Grammar and Wesley College. This carnival is the last competitive preparation for what should be an exciting week where our boys compete in the JPSSA and PSA Inter-School Athletics Carnivals. These are to be held on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 respectively at the WA Athletic Stadium. If you have time please come and support our teams. In advance I would like to thank all of the boys and their coaches for ensuring that our teams will compete to the best of their ability and in a spirit that befits what we stand for at Scotch.
Last week was Arts Week. This is such a special time in the Senior School, marking a time where the students display their skills and attributes in a myriad of activities in the areas of Drama, Art, Media, Photography and Music. Arts Week is also a timely reminder of the hours of commitment and quality of our teaching staff who have led the boys through their courses at all levels. While the boys may have many talents, it is the ability of our teachers to bring these talents to the fore that makes the perfect learning partnership. Arts Week concluded with our annual Senior Spring Concert and it was great to see many of our Year 12 boys receive acknowledgement for the final time as they near the end of their musical journey at Scotch. I would also like to congratulate and thank the PLC students and their staff for the role they played in making the concert a success. This is yet another great example of what our two schools can achieve through working in partnership with each other while maintaining the individual uniqueness of each school.
Scotch has had a tradition of encouraging leadership at various levels through the school. This week some of my senior staff and I will be conducting interviews to determine the senior student leadership positions for the 2014/2015 school year. I would like to thank all of those who nominated for any position and wish them well. While some students will be successful in their respective nomination, it is important to remember that all of our Year 12s are viewed as leaders and the wearing of the striped blazer is a significant statement that Year 12 is a very special cohort and that every student is expected to lead through setting an example to all other students through their actions and deeds.
Have a great fortnight

Australian Government Funds Our Matipwili (Tanzania) Project
This week the Australian High Commission for East Africa (DFAT), based in Nairobi announced that it would fund the building of the Matipwili Trade Centre. An amount of $30,000 has been set aside for the project. This will ensure that the building can go ahead uninterrupted and should ensure that at the central water catchment / gathering place and perhaps two of the teaching areas will be completed before May next year. This Australian government endorsement follows a lot of hard work - not only on the part architects and teachers who worked with the village last year to design the facility - but also the students form both Scotch and PLC who have laboured alongside the villagers during five trips in the past ten years. Students on the most recent trip in July this year started work on the foundations of the new Training Centre. Thank you to all members of both Perth school communities who have assisted us along the way and whose support no doubt helped to strengthened the case for funding.
Rocky Bay 'Walk With Me' Fundraiser
On last Sunday of August, Rocky Bay in Mosman Park held its annual fundraiser. Money raised at this event each year contributes towards improving the quality of lives of some of the most chronically disabled in our community. Three of our Year 12 boys volunteered to wheel disabled participants around the two-kilometre course through the streets of Mosman Park. The boys did a great job and helped to make the event enjoyable for these participants.
Good Samaritan Industries
In the last few weeks of term boys from both Year 10 and Year 7 will be visiting Good Samaritan Industries in Canning Vale. These visits will follow the journey of clothing items deposited in our own Good Sammy bin located near the Dining Room - decorated by Year 2 students during 2013. The facility at Canning Vale is a workplace for a large number of people with disabilities who perform the tasks of sorting and packing the clothing. The Year 10 student will visit twice - the first time for a tour and the second to work alongside the regular employees.

"Tell me what you listen to, and I'll tell you who you are." - Tiffanie DeBartolo
As mentioned in the last edition, the boys of the Music Department have received valuable feedback from the WA Schools' Festival adjudicators with additional recognition given to Big Band One through the presentation of a "Groove Award" which includes a $450 voucher to purchase musical equipment. The Combined Scotch College and PLC Symphony Orchestra received an "Excellent" Award for their performance at Churchlands Senior High School. Recently the Senior Guitar Ensemble also participated in the Festival, this time at Carine Senior High School, and this ensemble also received an "Excellent" Award. Congratulations to all those boys who participated in this State-wide competition and my thanks to all Staff who directed these ensembles.
On 18 August, Senior School cellist Matthia Au (Year 8, Alexander) had the pleasure of meeting cellist, performer and educator Aaron Minksy. At a workshop held at Shenton College, Matthia had the honour of playing a piece for him. Once all the invited musicians had performed, Aaron talked about making music fun by adding a variety of syncopated rhythms and other musical features. The next day, on the Sunday morning, Aaron talked about improvisation and he elaborated on the process of how by picturing something in your mind, you can then play what you think it sounds like. Congratulations Matthia on actively participating in what sounds like a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

Senior School Inter-House Athletics Day
Thank you to all the Pipe Band parents who assisted with the running of the various stalls at the Inter-House athletics - your efforts made the day a successful one for the Pipe Band, the athletes, their families and the Scotch community, showing the true spirit of volunteering at Scotch. In particular thanks should go to the coordinators of the stalls - Natasha Burt (Ice cream stall), Allyson Schaffe and Yvette Henderson (Cake stall), Mandy Perrignon and Sonya Read and Fleur and Brad Cassidy (Coffee stall and toasties - over 400 cups of coffee made!), David Sones (Hot food) and Linda Arnold and Yvonne Buchannan (Memorabilia). Thanks also to the whole Scotch community for supporting the stalls - the income supports the Pipe Band by assisting with the purchase and upkeep of uniforms and musical equipment and performances, where the boys not only represent Scotch, but, in some cases, Australia.

Head of Junior School
A celebration of effort and success
The past two weeks and the following fortnight will complete a month of celebrations of the talents, efforts and risk taking of our boys. Their efforts in sport, visual arts and academics will have been showcased and the boys will be able to reflect with pride on what they have learned and accomplished
The Inter-House Athletics Carnival began our month of effort and success. The boys were tested in a range of track and field events. Each boy proudly represented their house and demonstrated great commitment and effort throughout the day. Several long standing Junior School records were broken and a few were smashed.
Sean Kerr - Year 4 200m- 31.13
Gabriel Huberman - Year 3 Shot Put - 8.04m
Seamus Walton - Year 4 Discus - 20.36m
Matthew Coutts - Year 4 High Jump - 1.10m
James Spadanuda - Year 4 Triple Jump - 7.31m
As always, I was surprised and greatly impressed with the standard of performance I witnessed. Our boys are great athletes and clearly enjoyed the opportunity to compete and try. I wish to thank Mr Caniglia for once again organising a wonderful event and the many parents who came to support the boys on the day.
Our artists showcased their many talents at the IPSHA Art Exhibition, hosted by Santa Maria College. Scotch was one of 25 Junior Schools exhibiting work. The quality on display was outstanding. Work in clay, wood, silk, watercolour and much more decorated the hall. Ms Sabatay and the boys can be very proud of the work they displayed.
This week our artists will have another opportunity to let their talents shine. Boys from Year 1 to 12 will display work at the Inspirations Art Exhibition in the Dickinson Centre. I encourage parents to make time to come and visit the exhibition.
The musicians from Year 1 to 3 will perform for parents and friends at the Strings Celebration on Thursday 11 September. They have been working hard to prepare for the event and will show great confidence and risk taking attitude as they take to the stage.
Our celebration month will wrap up with the culminating learning experience for our Year 5 boys, the PYP Exhibition. They have been working on their exhibition all term and will finally have the opportunity to share their research, learning and action with parents, fellow students and teachers. The central idea for this years' exhibition is 'Challenges, risks and opportunities may lead to migration.' Each boy has devised his own burning question to research. The theme based on migration has provided a plethora of avenues to investigate. The boys are fully immersed in the theme and have discovered some very interesting facts. I am looking forward to seeing the finished products at the opening on Wednesday 17 September.
We take many opportunities to celebrate the achievements and efforts of our boys. The events listed here are but a few and demonstrate how our boys embrace risk-taking. Approaching the uncertainty represented in new experiences, our boys demonstrate great determination and forethought. I thank them for their willingness to have a go, to explore new ideas and to embrace the challenge.

Primary Years Programme (PYP)
Mathematics in the PYP
In the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), Mathematics is viewed as a vehicle to support inquiry, providing a global language through which we make sense of the world around us. It is intended that students become competent users of the language of Mathematics and can begin to use it as a way of thinking, as opposed to seeing it as a series of facts and equations to be memorised.
How Children Learn Mathematics:
Constructing meaning about Mathematics
Learners construct meaning based on their previous experiences and understanding, and by reflecting upon their interactions with objects and ideas.
Transferring meaning into symbols
When learners have constructed their ideas about a mathematical concept they attempt to transfer this understanding into symbols.
Applying with understanding
Learners demonstrate and act on their understanding.
In the Junior School we are continually striving to ensure we offer the boys a relevant, challenging, significant and engaging Mathematics programme, one that is connected as much as possible to the units of inquiry.

3T News
The boys in 3T are well and truly immersed in a new unit of inquiry that considers the arts. The unit has incited great interest and Ms Sabitay and Ms Samson, in their respective roles, are supporting our central idea through their specialist learning areas. Both the recent IPSHA Art Exhibition and the Ogham Soup Incursion were wonderful examples of immersion in this new unit.
In considering what constitutes art, the chaps recently went on an Art Hunt throughout the school. Parent volunteers took the lads and roamed the school property looking for artistic visions, some where you would least expect it. The boys used their iPads to capture images that were later printed and displayed to reveal the beauty that can be seen within our school. There's a rather amazing gallery of images to show for their efforts.
We are incredibly fortunate to welcome parents with some form of artistic affiliation into the classroom as guest speakers. In exploring the transdisciplinary nature of art, one such parent, a scientist, encouraged our boys to explore brain function through drawing. Some rather left-brain/right-brain challenges revealed themselves, opening our minds to new ways of considering creativity. Most importantly, boys who did not previously think of themselves as artistic have developed a new appreciation for their own abilities.
In continuing our investigations into what constitutes art, the boys have explored poetry as a form of artistic expression for our upcoming assembly item. Using a rather entertaining poem about creatures in classrooms, the lads considered how they would like to respond to this art form. We saw voice theatre, drama, costume design, limerick writing, couplet construction and drawing in response to this one art form. We hope you will be similarly inspired by our performance.
With such a short run to the end of term, the chaps in 3T are being encouraged to consider the stretch much like a running race. Having witnessed rather inspiring determination and energy at the recent Athletics Carnival, we look forward to similar reserves and displays of strength and enthusiasm to help us through to the end of the term.

'We Art Family'
On Sunday 24 August, Archibald Portrait Prize winner, Abdul Abdullah, officially opened the 2014 IPSHA Art Exhibition at Santa Maria College in Attadale. Over 25 schools have collaboratively exhibited under the banner "We Art Family", to help celebrate 2014 being International Year of Family. It showcased diversity of artwork, materials, techniques and interpretations of themes. The standard of work was impressive from such young artists and it provided a fabulous opportunity to teachers to network ideas, whilst exposing students to a myriad of aesthetic ideas.
There is great value in students both exhibiting and viewing artwork. An arts event like this provides a wide audience for their artwork. With so many schools exhibited, it inspires students. I always encourage students who view this exhibition to feedback to me directly about any artwork that they would love to recreate back at Scotch.
What struck me was that sometimes it is the simplest, most naïve artwork that catches your eye or makes you smile. At other times, it is the very technical and mature artwork that draws you in as a viewer. I feel stimulated and excited for anyone who was able to see this celebration of artwork.

French News
In order to make links to the "Where we are in place and time" unit of inquiry; the Year 5 classes have been researching French speaking countries around the world. We began by looking into la Francophonie, an international organisation uniting French speaking countries around the world. The boy's work will shed light on how the French language migrated to these different places through colonisation and migration and will be presented in the form of a brochure which will also highlight cultural elements which have been left by the French influence in these countries.

Middle School Build Phase 2
In the photo you can see just how close Phase Two of the Middle School build is to finishing. Lawn, garden beds and trees were installed last week, with the final components of electronics and fittings and the amazingly complex set of stairs leading from the Library to the ovals to be completed. The new Food Technology room is such an impressive addition to our campus it is tempting some staff to change careers. In the photo the library is on the right hand side, which will be the Junior and Middle School Library. Along with reading areas, work areas, 1 Degree facilities and an impressive balcony, the hidden jewel of this building is the enormous gallery space beneath it. The use of this space will be limited by our imagination with Outdoor Education already putting a creative proposal on how they might use the venue. The new building will be a showcase item during our Orientation Days on the 20 and 21 of October as we welcome new boys and families into the school. I am hopeful we will have the opportunity to show this fantastic new addition off to you prior to this in Week 1 of next term.
Piping in the Middle School
The Middle Years Pipe Band has had its first two combined sessions on the front lawn of the new Middle School building. It was a unique moment in the College's history and the boys were very proud of themselves, likewise was the odd parent who stayed on to catch a glimpse of their son perform. However there is no one prouder then Mr De Grussa who has been working with these boys for the past two years and has almost fulfilled his ambition of having Middle School boys ready and able to complete piping duties for the Middle School. For boys still interested in Pipes and Drums in Middle School there will be another intake of pipers in Year 6, 7 and 8 next year, with a drummer intake in Year 8.

Wind Around the Home 7PG
The boys of 7PG have recently been investigating methods of utilising renewable resources around the home. A renewable resource is something that people use that replenishes itself at a faster rate than it is used. They also learnt that some resources, such as trees, could be considered a renewable resource if they were used sustainably but if cut down too quickly would be a non-renewable resource. Part of a Science investigation required them to explore the most suitable location to place a small wind turbine to help provide power to their home. After learning about the difference between a vertical axis wind turbine and a horizontal axis wind turbine the boys created a small device to help them measure the strength of the wind and recorded results over the course of the week. As a result of the experiment the boys were able to determine that the best possible choice of wind turbine would be a vertical axis because the horizontal axis requires "clean" wind that is not always possible around the home.

The ten events were exciting and challenging and had a particular emphasis placed on higher order thinking skills.
The ten disciplines entailed challenges in Engineering, Science, Art and Poetry, English, Mathematics, General Knowledge, Cartography, Code Breaking, Creative Thinking and Philosophy.
The Year 6 team was up against teams from all across Western Australia and they did incredibly well. Out of the ten challenges our boys came first in four of them (English, Science, Mathematics and Code Breaking) and placed sixth overall. It would appear that all of the lunch times and homework hours that the boys put in to preparing for this event really paid off.

In the time between the last newsletter and this one, boys in Years 8, 9 and 10 presented a wonderful dramatic production of Two Weeks with the Queen over four performances. The Senior School came together for the Inter-House Athletics Carnival and after spirited competition the carnival concluded in a way no other school could have emulated. House marching followed the high precision marching display from the pipes and drums before a large and highly appreciative crowd of parents and local residents. Immediately following the Athletics Carnival a group of boys rushed off to perform in the Middle Years production.
Last week we enjoyed the creative talents of a large number of boys across Music, Visual Art, Drama and Media through the daily activities organised to celebrate Arts Week. Highlights included daily art battles where boys painted a picture in a 30-minute time frame, live music performances were held each lunch-time and the Inter-House Singing competition was conducted over three days. Thursday night saw the Year 11 Drama students perform in the Foundation Theatre while in the Dickinson Centre a large audience enjoyed the film productions of the Year 9 to 12 Media students at the Director's Cut Awards Night. The standard of film was very high and the Year 11 and 12 productions left us in awe of the boys' creative and technical skills. The week ended with the Music Department's Spring Concert. This was a fitting end to a busy week that saw every boy in the Senior School sing in a choir. Many other boys performed at a lunchtime concert, performed on stage in a dramatic production, painted in an art battle, showed a short film or performed in a music ensemble.
While a wealth of opportunities and experiences surround every boy all the time, for our Year 12 boys these experiences are rapidly coming to an end. With three weeks of term remaining, the full Year 12 cohort will march to assembly only one more time. For many this will mark the end of five years of marching up to the assembly. There are no more winter or summer sports to be played and only the PSA Athletics Carnival remains. Classes are now revising work and boys are studying hard in the lead up to the final exams. It is at this time of the year that we reflect on the journey the Year 12 boys have taken and realise how important it is for boys in all year groups to seize their opportunities. These moments do not come back. The message is no different for parents. Get along to as many School events as you can. If you saw any of the events I have listed during the past week, you will appreciate the importance of enjoying each and every opportunity.

THOMAS GAJEWSKI - YEAR 12, ALEXANDER
Thomas Gajewski has had an outstanding two years of football at Scotch College playing 21 out of a possible 24 games both years in the 1st XVIII team only missing due to injury. Tom made his debut last year and quickly cemented himself as a pivotal member in the Alcock winning Scotch team, claiming third place in the inaugural Cyril Hoft medal (Football fairest and best count) in a squad that won the Alcock Cup for the first time in 23 years.
Not only did he contribute on field in 2013, Tom's off field leadership throughout Year 11 held him in good stead earning him a peer voted vice captaincy role in 2014.
Tom's on field performances were nothing short of outstanding. Tagged or heavily followed every match Tom managed to be Scotch's leading possession getter and even more remarkable runner up leading goal kicker from the midfield.
It was not all one way forward as many footballers seem only to run. As the team succumbed to numerous injuries Tom's ability to win the ball in all areas of the ground, use elite decision making then move forward and hit the scoreboard kept a decimated Scotch College team in a winning position each game.
His ability as a player showcased each and every week left no coach or observer that he was amongst the PSA competitions best few players. Opposition coaches commented on Tom's uncanny control when making decisions and his ability to break apart quarters and games as traits difficult to match up against however pleasing to witness for all football enthusiasts.
Tom gained admiration not only in the PSA competition however made his colts debut for Claremont Tigers this year with the coaching staff putting him in their top five players each of the three games he played. His Claremont success however did not take away from his drive to compete and win games of football for Scotch. Given the opportunity to play colts leading up to his last game against Hale, Tom declined the offer setting his sights on performing against the benchmark. His performance that game left all coaches awarding Tom a best on ground five votes.
Tom was a runaway winner in the 2014 Cyril Hoft medal winning by a margin of 22 votes (equivalent to playing five extra games) capping off a remarkable two years of development at Scotch College.

CHARLIE GRANT - YEAR 12, SHEARER
Charlie Grant has played 1st XV Rugby for two seasons and has fulfilled the role of Vice Captain of Rugby for 2014. Charlie was also a part of the hugely successful Western Australia Under 17 team that won the National Junior Gold Cup defeating Victoria in the final.
Charlie is an outstanding rugby talent; defensively, at any level I have seen few better. Ruthless and precise he has shown the ability to neutralise the opposition attack swiftly and with a level of physicality rarely seen. His tackling has a game changing ability turning defence into attack with a single thunderous hit. In attack he has achieved double figures in terms of tries scored and recorded hat tricks on multiple occasions. Combining with his brother he has shown great pace, vision and the ability to put players into space. Coupled with unrivalled physicality and the ability to go forward and make ground regardless of the situation, he has been a force that all teams have struggled to cope with. Charlie has also developed a very effective kicking game, which has brought great balance to his all-round game.
As Vice Captain he has supported his Captain and inspired a group of boys to strive to constantly improve and exceed their expectations. A hugely passionate Scotch College student and rugby player he has led through his actions and the manner with which he conducts himself. Charlie has been an integral part of a group that has made significant progress in the wake of an enormously challenging season in 2013. His contribution in all facets has been outstanding and it is without hesitation that he is awarded Honours for Rugby Union in 2014.
REECE GRANT - YEAR 12, SHEARER
Reece Grant has been involved with the 1st XV for three seasons and was elected unanimously by his peers and the coaching staff to the role of 1st XV Captain this year. Reece was also a part of the hugely successful Western Australia Under 17 team that won the National Junior Gold Cup defeating Victoria in the final.
Reece is simply an outstanding rugby player and leader. He provides a huge physical presence in defence and a potent weapon in attack. I have seen very few players in his position defend with such precision, aggression and ruthlessness. His ability to shut down a team's attack is quite a spectacle. On many an occasion this year he has picked out the biggest, strongest most destructive ball carrier the opposition has to offer and has neutralised them with a bone shuddering hit. In attack Reece combined beautifully with his brother and demonstrated a very effective individual running game, scoring three tries in a game on multiple occasions and providing countless opportunities for his team. Combine that with his reliable goal kicking and his points tally for the season would be well over the hundred mark.
His leadership however has been his most outstanding accomplishment. Reece inherited a team that had not won a single game in 2013 and he used this as motivation to inspire his team to the College's most successful season since 2008. The turnaround was remarkable and due in no small measure to Reece's leadership. He has led by example in his actions and the manner in which he conducts himself on and off the field. An outstanding ambassador for Scotch College, he was the glue that held the team together and the inspiration for the rest of the team to continually strive to raise their expectations of personal performance. He is an outstanding young man and it is without hesitation that Reece achieves Honours for Rugby Union in 2014.

50 Mile Walk
Over the long weekend in August an intrepid group of students and staff ventured to Moray to test themselves in the 50 Mile Walk - the challenge to walk 50 Miles in under 18 hours. This was the 28th such walk and once again Scotch boys were joined by girls from Methodist Ladies' College. We were blessed with good weather, cold at night but dry at all times. The group had had two practice walks, one of 10 miles and one of 15, but it is a big step up to make 50! We were led out by Piper Marshall Barrymore (Year 11, Brisbane) at 3.45am and settled quickly in to the pattern of a stop every hour: five minutes at the end of the first hour, then ten minutes, five minutes and then a 20 minute meal stop. This continues throughout the day on gravel road and back tracks around Dwellingup. During the late afternoon parents and friends arrive from Perth, and at the final stop in Dwellingup, cold and dark, this group cheered on the walkers as they near the end. Just after 9.00pm, the 19 boys and 18 girls and staff walked back in to Moray, arms linked, staggering, limping, but happy to have achieved something pretty special.
I urge the boys from Anderson, Shearer and Stuart to take on the challenge next year and thank the staff who gave up their long weekend to offer the students this opportunity - Messieurs Galipo and Freitag, and Mesdames Bermingham, Enfield-Kirk, Freitag, and the staff from MLC.

Careers Information
Mr Frusher, Careers Adviser
Year 12 Interviews and University applications
Mr Frusher has interviewed most of the Year 12 students to assist them with their TISC applications and other options for next year and beyond. Applications for public universities (UWA, Murdoch, ECU and Curtin) must be made via TISC Online (web). All procedures for these applications are outlined in the 2015 TISC GUIDE, of which all students have a copy. Applications for Notre Dame University must be completed separately on a written application form that is available from Mr Frusher.
NB: Please do not apply for entry to Notre Dame via TISC.
TAFE applications must be completed via the web by following the instructions at http://tasonline.tafe.wa.edu.au
All additional proof of employment and copies of reports need to be submitted via post to TAFE Admissions. If a student is in doubt about obtaining an ATAR sufficient for his required course at university, then a TAFE application should be submitted as a safety net.
Applications for all universities and TAFE close on Tuesday 30 September 2014, but students are advised to apply well before this date and not leave it to the last day. If parents have any concerns in regard to the above matters, please contact Mr Frusher at Scotch on 9383 6830 or PFrusher@scotch.wa.edu.au.
UWA Scholarships
Applications for a variety of awards and scholarships at The University of Western Australia are now open. Year 12 students who are expecting to do well in this year's WACE examinations, and who are likely to list a UWA course as their first preference, may like to consider the following information in relation to the UWA Fogarty Foundation City and Regional Scholarships and the UWA Vice Chancellor's Awards of Distinction:
- Students wishing to apply for either of these can now do so by visiting the Pandora online application site https://www.grs.uwa.edu.au/Pandora
- Applications for both of these awards close on Tuesday 30 September 2014
- Once students have completed their online application they need to print the application confirmation and the School Principal's endorsement form. They read, sign and send in the application confirmation. They then need to give Peter Frusher the School Principal's endorsement form for him to complete and submit. More information about these and other awards and scholarships offered by UWA can be found by visiting http://www.scholarships.uwa.edu.au/home/undergrad
- Further information is available by contacting the Scholarships Office on 6488 2807 or undergradschools@uwa.edu.au
Curtin University Scholarship
A variety of scholarships are now open for future studies at Curtin University. Some of these scholarships require an application to be submitted and others are granted automatically to high academic achievers. See Mr Frusher for more information or go to the Curtin University website and search for scholarships.
University Equity Programmes
All universities offer a variety of entry programmes for students who have experienced disadvantage and disruption during Year 12. Please see Mr Frusher for further information and application procedures.
