Headmasters ReflectionsHeadmaster's Reflections

Dear Community

Welcome back to Winter Term. It is always reassuring to see our community return and gather together at the start of each term. As we all know the commencement of this term will be forever imprinted on our hearts and minds knowing that two valued members of the immediate Scotch College community, Mo Maslin (Year 7) and his Grandfather Nick Norris (OSC '63) did not return; sadly, nor did Mo's siblings, Evie and Otis.

Much has been said and written about this senseless loss of life resulting from the MH17 tragedy. When I first heard the news that our community had lost Mo and his Grandfather Nick, my first reaction was to ensure that notwithstanding how we were feeling as a College community, our first understanding must be that what transpired on that fateful day was a family tragedy of the highest order. The need to reach out and support was emphasised throughout our Chapel Services last week and exemplified through the lyrics of our chosen hymn 'Make me a Channel of your Peace':

Make me a Channel of your Peace

Where there is hatred, let me bring Your love,

Where there is injury, Your pardon Lord,

And where there's doubt, true faith in You

Make me a channel of your peace,

Where there's despair in life let me bring hope,

Where there is darkness - only light,

And where there's sadness, ever joy

Oh Master, grant that I may never seek,

So much to be consoled as to console,

To be understood, as to understand,

To be loved, as to love with all my soul

Make me a channel of your peace,

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

In giving to all men that we receive,

And in dying that we're born to eternal life

Make me a channel of your peace,

Gods gifts have come to you,

Now the sin has gone and cleared,

Jesus is living life on the cross

Oh master grant that I may never seek,

so much to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love with all my soul

The direct impact on Scotch was the loss of Mo and Nick, however, Scotch College values and understands what the family unit truly means and on reflecting upon this we had to come to the realisation that we had also lost part of our extended family community in Otis who was coming to Scotch in 2018 and Evie Maslin. The role we must play now is to offer the Maslin and Norris families our spiritual, physical and emotional support into the future. In particular our thoughts and prayers are with the parents of Mo, Evie and Otis, Rin and Anthony Maslin. All of us who are parents will never be able to understand what the families have experienced and the challenging journey that lies before them. As a College of the Uniting Church in Australia we must place our trust in the Christian message of hope as told through the gospels.

The family have organised a Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving for their family and close friends on Sunday 3 August in the Dickinson Centre.

The College has arranged for two books of remembrance to be available for signing. One will be located at the Middle School office and the other one will be in reception at Collegians House. These will both be available from Tuesday until close of the offices Friday.

It is very hard to find words that can truly reflect what has occurred and how to find a way forward. As such I simply wish to leave the community with a simple reflection that in some small way may help some of us to conceptualise what we have all experienced.

The Footprints Prayer

One night I had a dream...

I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord, and across the sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; One belonged to me, and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of my life flashed before us, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that many times along the path of my life, There was only one set of footprints.

I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in my life This really bothered me, and I questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, You would walk with me all the way; But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, There is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why in times when I needed you the most, you should leave me.

The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child. I love you, and I would never, never leave you during your times of trial and suffering. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you.

As a Headmaster, and more importantly as a parent myself, I will never be the same as a result of what has taken place through this global tragedy. As we keep our families close to our hearts I remind us all to remember and pray for all of the victims of MH17 and their families.

Rest in peace, Mo, Evie, Otis and Nick.

Anderson House Hosts ARAFMI

On the last Thursday of the holiday break, Anderson House Boys from Year 8 to Year 12 came back to school to host young carers from the ARAFMI (Association of Relatives and Friends of the Mentally Ill.) The Scotch boys ran a day of activities on our campus with the aim of providing an enjoyable break for 17 young people who provide primary support for close relatives with mental illness. Often these young carers are isolated and venerable. The Anderson boys worked hard organizing games to make the day memorable for all.

Tanzania Expedition 2014

After three weeks in Tanzania, the group of Scotch and PLC students and staff returned to Perth with a deep and no doubt lasting impression of a wonderful country and people. The remote rural village of Matipwili where work has started on building a Trade Training Centre, received the visitors as friends and the time spend labouring alongside villagers further reinforced the friendship and strengthened the partnership that has been built up over the past 10 years. The educational needs of the village are great and every visit does a little more to improve the facilities teaching and learning for the whole community.

During the trip, the group also visited Tella Primary School on the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro and delivered much-needed stationary, purchased locally by the group. In addition, the calico bags decorated by Scotch Year 5 boys with Australian animal motives and containing pitchers and games were distributed to two classes at the school. The Tanzanian students were overcome with excitement upon receiving these handcrafted personal gifts.

The Scotch and PLC students planted trees with a community on Kilimanjaro - facilitated by the International School, Moshi and the Jane Goodall Institute. Furthermore, they also hosted a conference for students from two high school in Dar es Salaam. All students, including our own were members of the Australian Tanzanian Young Ambassador group. Discussion took place on a host of topics with all students learning that they had more in common than they perhaps thought, despite the differences in wealth and opportunity.

Thanks must go to the many people in the Scotch and PLC communities who generously supported the fundraising for the expedition this year. The money raised has gone directly into Tanzanian communities and very gratefully received.

Year 10 Senior First Aid Course

There are still places remaining for the Year 10 Senior First Aid Course, offered as part of the Friday afternoon Community and Service programme. This is a great opportunity for boys to achieve a high level standard first aid qualification during school hours. Year 10 boys who would like to enrol for the final course this year need to see Mr Cordner before Friday, 1 August.

Environment

Last Friday 25 July, fifty one students from Year 6 at Scotch College participated in the Men of the Trees attempt at the Guinness Book of Record world record breaking challenge. Led by their teachers Ms Robyn Bose, Lisa O'Toole and Scotch College Sustainability Coordinator, Mr Chris Menage, the initiative made national headlines (http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2014-07-25/new-world-tree-planting-record-believed-to-have-been-set-in-wa/5625286 ). The boys showed remarkable restraint in the hours leading up to the actual challenge when 2200 participants planted 100,000 trees in the hour between midday and 1pm. The emphasis on the day was very much on team work and how many hands make light work when it comes to caring for the environment. This a large scale operation when coordinated by Men of the Trees and illustrated the passion people have in going to extraordinary lengths to get a positive, can do message out their into the community. It will be undoubtedly an experience the boys will not forget any time soon.

Looking back to look forward

Reflective: We thoughtfully consider the work and our own ideas and experiences. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development. (IBO MTPYPH)

Mid-way through the school year is always marked with assessments and semester reporting. This year the Junior School revamped our written reports to provide a detailed and informative reflection on the progress, achievement and engagement of each boy. Reflecting on what the boys have achieved and need to further consolidate allows us to better plan for what to address moving forward.

As teachers, we constantly reflect on the boys' learning through formative assessment practices and ongoing review of their work. This allows us to plan for individual needs. We have structures in place that ensure the boys are responsible for reflecting on their own work and learning.

The Student Led Conferences are a celebration of the achievement and engagement of the boys and are intended to keep parents informed about their son's learning as well as to provide an opportunity for active participation in a snapshot of their son's day at school. This week's Student Led Conferences are a brilliant opportunity for parents to engage in a reflective activity. The boys will lead their parents through the learning they have been engrossed in throughout Semester 1. They will share their success and challenges and parents will be able to see areas where the boys will need further development and support. An important aspect of the Student Led Conference is the goal setting for future improvement the boys will do in partnership with their parents.

Supporting this process is the openness of our teachers to meet with and discuss how we are planning for future development and what can be done at home to support this. I encourage all parents to join with their son for the conference.

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

PYP Exhibition

On July 24, we had an excellent turnout of parents for our annual exhibition presentation. Many thanks to those families who attended - it was great to see you and we all appreciate your ongoing support of our teaching and learning programme. For those parents who were unable to attend, the information shared at the parent engagement workshop has been added to the Parent Wiki.

The Exhibition

The PYP Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of a PYP school and in the school life of our Year 5 boys. The boys carry out an extended, collaborative inquiry process, known as the Exhibition, under the guidance of teachers and mentors. This event is the culmination of the Primary Years Programme. Students are involved in synthesizing the essential elements of the PYP and sharing them with the whole school community. As a culminating experience, it is an opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the IB learner profile that they have been developing throughout their engagement with the programme.

The PYP Exhibition has a number of key purposes:

  • For students to engage in an in-depth, collaborative inquiry
  • To provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate independence and responsibility for their own learning
  • For students to synthesize and apply their learning of previous years and to reflect upon their journey through the PYP
  • To demonstrate how students can take action as a result of their learning
  • To unite the students, teachers, parents and other members of the school community in a collaborative experience that incorporates the essential elements of the PYP

This year, the boys' inquiries will be guided by the transdisciplinary theme of 'Where we are in place and time' with the central idea "Challenges, risks and opportunities may lead to migration."

The Exhibition this year will take place on Wednesday 17 September.

This is a busy but exciting time for all and we look forward to the learning to come.

1G News

Year 1G have had a very exciting time exploring Literature. We embarked on an excursion to The Literature Centre where we utilised our amazing visual literacy skills and read stories through pictures. This excursion was particularly exciting as we overlooked the Old Fremantle Jail whilst eating lunch and the boys had many interesting questions to ask.

We were thrilled to have a visit to our classroom from the talented author/illustrator James Foley. He was extremely funny and inspired us greatly to become amazing authors and illustrators. The boys were very motivated about writing after James shared with us the first book he had ever written when he was in Pre-Primary. We were very lucky as we had a sneak peek into his new story 'The Last Viking Returns' which hasn't even been released yet. This fabulous book was hot off the press. James taught us how to draw Vikings and we had a wonderful time drawing these.

I am sure there will be some budding writers from 1G in the years to come.

Art News

Arts and Creativity

Arts and creativity can provide an outlet for expressing feelings and ideas. They can improve focus and concentration whilst relaxing the mind and body. The Year 3 students have been enjoying calm music whilst focussing on painting flowers on silk.

Through the Arts, we try to promote creativity and curiosity as everyday ways of thinking, engaging and responding to the world. During Term 3 there are a few exhibitions that will showcase a range of creative explorations of ideas and materials.

In Week 6, IPSHA hosts its biennial Visual Art Exhibition titled "We Art Family" at Santa Maria College, where artwork from about 30 schools is exhibited collaboratively. The theme this year celebrates 2014 being "International Year of the Family." In Week 8, Scotch hosts its own Year 1 - 12 Art Exhibition, "Inspirations," which beautifully highlights the progression of arts skills and awareness of boys across Junior, Middle and Senior School. In Week 9, artwork and music will be an integral part of the PYP Exhibition.

Performing Arts News

The boys in Years 2, 3 and 4 have enthusiastically begun lessons focusing on the music of Ogham Soup, who will be performing their exciting repertoire for us in Week 6. Ogham is pronounced 'owem'. Ogham is the word for the ancient Irish 'alphabet', so the name of the group is an Irish take on 'Alphabet Soup'. Ogham Soup, which consists of three Melbourne-based musicians, present the very best of traditional Irish music, taking students on a musical journey the length and breadth of traditional Ireland. The performance shares songs, tunes, stories and humour that typically make traditional Irish music and culture popular the world over. We hope that parents will be able to enjoy this fabulous experience with us so keep an eye on this space for more information closer to the time!

Friendly Schools and Families

Talking with your children about being bullied

  • Many children who are bullied do not tell a trusted adult as they think they are dobbing. 'Dobbing' is when a person deliberately tries to get attention or to get someone else into trouble.
  • 'Asking for help' is when someone feels the situation is out of his/her control and he/she is unable to deal with it alone. If anyone sees someone else in this situation they should also ask for help.
  • What are students being taught at school to help them deal with bullying situations?

All students at our school are being taught that: When I have a problem I can:

- Try to stand up for myself in a positive way.

- Try to talk with the person I am having a problem with.

- Walk away and ignore the person completely.

- Get help from a teacher or another person I trust.

- Ignore the situation and keep playing or working.

- Talk to a friend to get some ideas to help me make a decision.

- Try coming to an agreement with the other person.

You can reinforce these messages by discussing them with your children at home.

From the Head of Middle SchoolMiddle School

Our start to Winter Term has been difficult for many in Middle School as we try to understand and come to grips with the loss of a much-loved student in Mo Maslin. The tragedy has brought out the best of the Scotch College Community where the depth and strength of the fabric that binds us as students, parents, teachers and past students has held us and sustained us during a particularly difficult time. Letters, emails, texts, phone calls, hugs, conversations and just your quiet presence in and around us over the last week have been reassuring and appreciated.

Student Led Conferences

The Student Led Conferences for your son with his homeroom teacher commence this week. Central to this will be the Semester 2 goals sheet your son has been working on at the start of this term. Each student has completed an analysis of their report card: criterion grades, Approaches to Learning grades and teacher comments and distilled this down into a one page summary of their work to date. From there they have developed two or three goals to use as a focus point for their effort this semester. This is an important process for our students in two ways: to clarify or narrow their focus for improvement this semester and importantly, to groove or develop the habit of reflection and goal setting that they will hopefully apply independently to support their learning in Senior School and beyond. The 3 Way conferences are with the homeroom teacher, parents and the student as an equal participant. As always if you would like to speak with a specialist teacher regarding a specific matter please contact the office and we can help arrange that for you. If you haven't yet made an appointment time online for your Student Led Conference please phone Rebecca Kennington on 9383 6967.

Year 8 2015

Tomorrow evening 29 July I will repeat an information session for parents of current Year 7 boys moving into Year 8 next year. This is a repeat of the Parent Information Session delivered at the end of last term. It will cover topics such as uniforms, Houses, subject choice in the Arts and Design Technology. Venue is MacKellar Hall 6.30pm.

Year 7 International Immersion Week

Immersion Week for Year 7 boys is Week 10 of this term. Year 7 boys will soon be asked to make a choice for this week-long immersion programme from the following three options:

  • French Immersion Week: $70
  • Indonesian Immersion Week: $70
  • Singapore@School parallel tour: no cost.
  • Year 7 Singapore Tour - fully booked.

Access Road Closure

Access to the College via the internal access road off Stirling Road near the Uniform Shop will be closed off to through traffic as the final stage of the Middle School building project is completed. Vehicles will not be able to drop off or pick up students from either the Junior School or MacKellar Hall pickup/drop off points. The Kiss and Drop area to the left of the entry to the ovals will remain in place.

From the Head of Senior SchoolSenior School

In the week prior to the recent school break, I travelled as part of the supervising staff accompanying the 163 Year 9 boys on the Canberra Tour. While stories of great sacrifice from Australian service men and women remain with me well after the visit to the Australian War Memorial, to name just one highlight, so too does the manner in which our boys conducted themselves throughout the tour. Staff at different venues frequently commented on the behaviour and courtesy shown by so many boys. Comments of this nature do not come as a surprise, rather the comments reminded us of the calibre of so many of our young men. It is with this most recent Year 9 tour fresh in my mind that I opened an email from a member of the public on the first day of term that further reinforced what it is to be a Scotch boy. I have included an extract below.

Over the past months I have travelled daily on the train from Subiaco to Fremantle and this morning was not the first time that a younger member of the school (probably Middle School) has offered me his seat on the train or at the station. On yet another occasion a Scotch boy moved quickly to pick up something I had dropped and hand it to me. Thank you to the young Stuart House boy this morning for bringing a smile to my face and thanks to the school for encouraging such courtesy.

Year 12 students have just commenced their last term of timetabled classes at Scotch College. For many the coming months will mark the end of many years at Scotch and will be filled with mixed feelings. While the next nine weeks will be a period of intense effort and focus in the lead up to final Year 12 examinations, I encourage all Year 12 boys to also savour this time and strike a balance between the achievement of longer-term goals and the enjoyment of every moment.

We commence the term on a deeply sad note with the passing of a young Year 7 Scotch boy, Mo Maslin and his younger sister, Evie and brother, Otis and their grandfather, Nick Norris, an Old Scotch Collegian. The family and members of the community touched by this loss remain firmly in our thoughts and prayers.

A reminder to parents that the Personal project is due on Friday, 8 August. On this day the report, process journal and product are due. Personal projects are to be submitted in the IB Office - Room E33 - between 8am and 3.30pm. For those boys who have created large products, they can submit photos of their product. All large products need to be delivered to the Dickinson Centre on Monday, 15 September, in preparation for the showcase.

The final student-supervisor meetings are held this week. It is vital that students attend this meeting so that their supervisor can clarify submission and showcase requirements.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their national Capital as part of the Civics and Citizenship education. To assist you in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This contribution will be paid directly to the School upon completion of the excursion. Once this has been received by the School, it will be refunded to you and shown as a credit on your fees statement.

We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this programme.

The Canberra Tour was a rewarding experience for all students, with 163 boys and 99 girls from PLC attending.

Athletics

The Athletics season commences on Monday, 18 August 2014. The four weeks athletics season is a very short one. It is hoped that all athletes attend as many training sessions as possible.

Throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s the team has experienced considerable success because it has been supported by the students of Scotch College. School spirit is created by the commitment and endeavours of its students. Scotch College has now won three consecutive Alcock Shields for Athletics, a rare feat in the PSA and testimony to the athletic talent of our students, commitment to their school and their willingness to train hard. Success will only come again this year with sacrifice, commitment and hard work. The last time Scotch College won four consecutive Alcock Shields for Athletics was in the mid-1960s. Our goal for the 2014 Athletics season is to maintain our winning streak and win our fourth consecutive Alcock Shield.

I appreciate that the athletics season falls at a demanding time for our students; with end of year examinations approaching, finals for community sport and development squads. However, if boys are organised with their time and committed to their School they will make it a priority to train with the athletics team. The physical and mental benefits of boys doing athletics are enormous and flow on into any sports they may play.

To accommodate the demands of time on our athletes, there are a large number of trainings available. Please attempt to make at least three training sessions per week.

Interhouse Surfing & Bodyboarding Competition 2014

Despite the cold, windy, onshore conditions down at Cove and Cottesloe Main, all the boys who competed in the Interhouse Surfing and Bodyboarding performed to the best of their ability in the challenging conditions. A regrettable absence of the 2 top surfers from Keys House (Josh and Fletcher) at the competition opened the door for almost anybody to take out the surfing title! Hugo Shervington (Year 11, Alexander) took out the senior surf division and Riley Walker (Year 9, Shearer) won the junior division. Julien Walker (Year 10, Cameron) won the Junior Bodyboarding and Oliver Frey (Year 11, Brisbane) won the senior section. Congratulations to Alexander House who won the Interhouse surf trophy over reigning champions Ross House. Thank you to all surfers and bodyboarders who competed, parents for supporting their sons and to Mr Rugg and Mr Brogden for helping me out to make the day run smoothly.

Telethon Kids Institute

I am a researcher at Telethon Kids Institute in Subiaco, within the Paediatric Respiratory Physiology (Kids Lung Health!) group. We currently require the help of children aged 3-17 for various studies looking at improving the lung health of children with asthma, cystic fibrosis as well as other conditions. The participation of healthy children in our research helps us to understand the difference between health and disease, which is integral to our research. All the studies we are currently running are very easy and good fun, and children usually really enjoy the experience as we have very experienced researchers that understand how to work with children to make our research fun! We also provide show bags of goodies as a thank you. Some parents choose to enrol their kids in our studies because it is good for children's extracurricular interests (many of the children have an interest in science or medicine and really gain a lot from the interactions with the scientists and doctors). Some schools also have a community service component, and participation in our studies can contribute towards this, as we can provide the relevant certificates and documents for this purpose. See below for contact information.
