Welcome back to Autumn Term. I trust all families took the opportunity to recharge over the Easter break and that the boys tried to slow down the pace and number of their commitments.
Week 1 has already proved to be very busy. Well done to Mr Stewart and the Junior School on celebrating ANZAC Day with such a special ceremony. The boys read well and the ceremony provided a very poignant reminder of ANZAC DAY for all of the boys, staff and parents that were in attendance. Week 1 finished with our Scottish Banquet. Congratulations to everyone involved in putting on such a fantastic evening. The move to the Dickinson Centre proved a great success nearly doubling the numbers of parents that chose to attend.
The early part of this term will be particularly busy for our senior boys who face their major examinations this week. Likewise the Year 10 boys have a very busy month of May as they face major decisions about which course to do in Year 11 and which subjects to choose within their chosen course. All Year 10 families will receive an email about this process plus a Youtube video outlining the upcoming meetings and issues pertaining to the selection process.
You may have noticed in this week's press that we have advertised two very important positions for the College; the Director of Teaching and Learning and the Head of Residential Life. Should you know any suitable candidates please feel free to point them to our website for further information. Both of these positions are senior and central to what we do as a College.
Before the break, I circulated a survey regarding the possible extension of the mid-year break. Thank you to all who took the time to respond to this very important survey. The College Executive will be meeting to discuss the results of both the staff and parent responses. I hope to inform the community of the outcome of our deliberations within the next fortnight.
We will be embarking on the last few Capital briefings over the next couple of weeks. I would like to reiterate my thanks for all those who have already attended one of the sessions. They have proved to be invaluable for many reasons.
Finally, it was great to see the number of parents and students down at our ovals this week as we commenced both the JPSSA and PSA winter sport schedule.
Have a great fortnight.

Community and Service
Winter Appeals
At this time of the year there is a heightened awareness of the plight of Perth's considerable homeless population. Service agencies such as UnitingCare West (UCW) and Salvation Army send out requests for food and clothing to provide comfort as the cold and wet of winter approaches. Scotch College has long supported these agencies and we are set to do so again in 2014. While the UCW Winter Appeal officially commences on June 1, now is the time to start setting aside non-perishable food items for the appeal during you weekly shop. Food Bank WA has also approached the College for support, so there is plenty of need for items. Information about where to drop off food will be provided in the next edition of The Thistle.
The harsh reality of winter is most acutely felt by those forced to sleep rough in Parks and sand dunes around Perth. For the past six years, Scotch College boys have assisted to provide some comfort through the Street Swags project. These swags, fabricated by Bandyup prison inmates are provided with a foam mattress and rolled by boys. At the end of last term, the Order of St John distributed the swags completed by Scotch this year to St Patrick's in Fremantle and Ruah Community Services.
Student Exchanges
Now that Scotch College is a member of the Round Square group of schools, opportunities for student exchanges have emerged. Two exchange places have been offered for this year to current Year 10 students - to St Andrews College in Christchurch New Zealand and De La Salle College in Vienna, Austria. Both these places need to be taken up as soon as possible.
So far there have been seven offers of exchange places for Year 10 boys in 2015 from other Round Square schools in Chile, USA, South Africa, India, Romania and Canada. This is an exciting development for Scotch as we strive to provide international experiences and connections for our boys, as well as have the benefit to our community of a rich mixture of visitors from all over the world.
This term the call will go out for current Year 9 boys to express an interest in going on exchange for periods of up to a term during 2015. An Information Evening for parents and boys on the exchange programme will be held towards the middle of the term.
Many schools in Perth offer exchanges to their students. Scotch has now made this a priority. The Round Square organisation provides the assurance of quality and an exchange mechanism that is well established. The two other Round Square schools in Western Australia, Bunbury Grammar and Geraldton Grammar have been sending students overseas to member schools for years and will provide the guidance needed to get going on what we hope will be a year feature of the Year 10 programme.

"Where words leave off, music begins." Heinrich Heine - 19th Century German Poet
On Saturday, 26 April, 35 boys from the Scotch Youth Voices travelled with Director Ms Sullivan, Accompanist Ms Blankendaal, Mr Ledger, Mr Ramsay, Mr Coughlan, Mrs Hoy and Mr Hoy (coach driver and expert guide) to the 2014 Fairbridge Folk Festival. The Scotch Youth Voices performed at Fairbridge in 2013 and it was with great pride that they were invited back to perform on the Youthopia Stage with the Award-winning West Australian singer-songwriter Andrew Winton for the second year in a row. Andrew Winton, as a Patron of the Festival, spoke very highly of the boys and their enthusiasm for musical performance and said how much he valued and supported the opportunities for young people to become involved in the Arts. An excellent rendition of Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" was then performed to the crowd that increased in number during the set, with boys and Andrew putting a smile on everyone's face with a quick, impromptu-style performance of "Drunken Sailor" complete with eye patch. I hope to publish some photos in the next edition of the Thistle and on the screens around the school.
Upcoming events this term and beyond include the Mt Gambier Generations in Jazz Tour 8 - 12 May, the Junior and Middle School Music Camp 3 - 4 June, the Junior and Middle School Autumn Concert 20 June, Reporter Photos 23 July, Senior Recital and Upson Award 31 July, Jazz Night 8 August, Performance Festivals 9 - 10 August and Con Brio 12 - 13 August. Please make a note of the new date for the annual Jazz Night - now to be held at the end of Week 3 Winter Term.
Each of the events listed above are supported by FOSM. If you would like to join the Friends of Scotch Music (FOSM) - a group of parents who enthusiastically support the work of boys and staff in the Music Department, the process is very straight forward via the FOSM email below. FOSM meets once or twice each term with all meetings beginning at 7.00pm. Meetings go for approximately one hour, and are held in the Senior School MUSIC Room with everyone welcome. Please consider becoming involved in the FOSM Parent Support group as an excellent way to support your son and the Music Programme at Scotch College. The next FOSM Meeting is to be held this Monday, 5 May.

Insurance Against Injury
Scotch does not provide insurance cover for students on a 24 hour basis. However, we do have accident insurance for all boys whilst they are in the charge and under the control of the College. This includes cover whilst on work experience. The amount of cover is dependent upon the type of injury, generally to a maximum of $1,000.00, with the exception of total and permanent disability. This cover does not include expenses which can be claimed through Medicare and private health insurance or the Medicare Gap and only provides limited cover for dental expenses. Parents are strongly recommended to supplement the School's cover with their own private insurance.

Reflecting, Remembering and Thanking
Reflective: We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experiences.
Wednesday 25 April is a day when all Australians reflect on the blessing we have living in this great century. On this day we are prompted to consider the actions of those who have given their time and in many cases their lives to ensure that we continue to live peacefully in our beautiful country.
ANZAC Day 2014 was celebrated in the Junior School with our own service on Wednesday 30 April. Our Year 5 boys led the School in a moving ceremony. They shared with our younger students the origins of ANZAC Day and what it means to all Australians and New Zealanders.
The ceremony was carefully explained to the Junior School boys to assist them in understanding the reasons for and the context of each part of the service. They learnt about why we lay a laurel wreath at the foot of the flagpoles:
The laying of the wreath of remembrance has its tradition linked to ancient Rome where victors and those soldiers showing great bravery were presented with a crown woven from laurel. Today we lay wreaths woven from laurel on ANZAC Day to recognise the bravery of the men and women who died protecting our country and our freedom.
The Year 5 boys explained why we play the Last Post and Rouse to remember the fallen:
The last post is played to signify the end of the soldier's day's activities in Military tradition. The Last Post is also now used at funeral and memorial services as a final farewell and symbolises that the duty of the dead is over and that they can rest in peace. "The Rouse" is played at daytime services to signify that after the period of mourning, life and duty continue.
Our service reflected on the ANZAC Spirit that was born from courage, honour, endurance, and mateship; virtues that all of us should develop in ourselves.
The boys led us through remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to ensure we, and people around the world, enjoy freedom and security. I commend the Year 5 students for their fine role in sharing this special remembrance with our school community, and all Junior School students for their engagement in the service.

Primary Years Programme (PYP)
Science in the Primary Years Programme
In the PYP science is viewed as the exploration of the biological, chemical and physical aspects of the natural world, and the relationships between them. In Junior School the teaching and learning of science takes place in our units of inquiry, which form our transdisciplinary programme of inquiry. The IB learner profile is integral to teaching and learning science in the PYP because it represents the qualities of effective learners and internationally minded students. The learner profile, together with the five essential elements of the programme-knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and action-informs planning, teaching, and assessment in science.
IB primary students in Australia demonstrate science literacy above and beyond national achievement scores:
Conducted by a research team at Deakin University, Melbourne, this new study suggests that compared to a nationwide sample of students, Australian PYP students achieve particularly well in science literacy based on Australia's national assessment program.

3C News
The 3C boys enjoyed their first term in Year 3 immensely. They brought in wonderful family heirlooms and shared these with the class through an 'Explain Everything' presentation.
A highlight of the term was visiting Lake Claremont. The boys collected specimens from the lake and we had great fun sketching some of the different creatures that we had found in the ecosystem.
The boys love using their iPads in different subjects. They did a wonderful job of constructing 3D objects using marshmallows and matchsticks and then created a Pic Collage of the different 3D shapes. They also used Popplet to explain the difference between perimeter and area.
The boys are extremely busy at the moment preparing for NAPLAN and are looking forward an exciting term.

Friendly Schools and Families
Hello to the Scotch College Community. For those of you who have recently joined us, we run a program here called the Friendly Schools Plus program. I coordinate the program, which endeavours to address the following aspects of life at Scotch:
1. BUILDING CAPACITY: Committed and Engaged Leadership, System Support and Resources, Ensuring Capability with School Community Needs.
2. SUPPORTIVE SCHOOL CULTURE: Positive Whole School Culture, Effective Classroom Practice and Environment, Positive Peer Group Influence.
3. PROACTIVE POLICIES AND PRACTICES: Policy Development, Information Technology, Policy Framework and Implementation: Prevention, Early Response and Case Management, Integrated Focus on Orientation and Transition.
4. KEY UNDERSTANDINGS AND COMPETENCIES: Staff Professional Learning, Explicit Student Learning through the Curriculum, Effective Family Communication.
5. PROTECTIVE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: Physical Attributes of the School, Supportive School Facilities and Activities.
6. SCHOOL-FAMILY-COMMUNTY PARTNERSHIPS: Strengthening Family Links, Working Collaboratively with Health, Education and Community Service.
When looking more closely at the second area - Supportive School Culture, Effective Classroom Practice and Environment - we deliver a classroom program that focuses on Social and Emotional Learning. Each week teachers will be running short lessons that develop the following skills. These skills help to develop resilience and empathy as well as being an effective tool set for reducing and addressing bullying-related issues.
- Self-Awareness - understanding our feelings
- Self-Management - handling emotions in appropriate ways
- Social Awareness - respecting the feelings of others
- Relationship Skills - dealing positively with relationship problems
- Social Decision-Making - making choices and considering the consequences
Each fortnight I will offer ideas on how to work with your children at home as research demonstrates that efforts to change the attitudes and behaviour of students are more likely to be successful if families are actively involved and share a sense of ownership over the process. The first suggestion appears below.
What can you do to help reduce bullying in our school?
- Talk regularly with your children about bullying
- Encourage your children to 'ask for help' if they are being bullied at school
- If your children are fighting at home, help them discuss their problem and come to a mutual solution
- Encourage your children to be assertive by helping them to practise speaking in a firm but friendly way, making eye contact, looking calm and smiling and feeling good about themselves

Great Mental Maths app
In Term 1, during the Parent Engagement Workshops (PEWs), parents had the opportunity to learn about the importance of mental mathematics, play Numero, and discover other great mathematics games to play at home.
The iPad can be a valuable tool to use as part of your son's mental mathematics practice. One app that will support mental mathematics development is Math Bingo. Your son can download Math Bingo from the Scotch self-service when at school and it can then be used at home alongside Numero or other mathematics games to help reinforce various mental mathematics strategies.
The object of Math Bingo is to get a pattern of five Bingo Bugs in a row by correctly answering mathematics problems. Math problems are presented at the top of the game screen. Correct solutions to problems answered incorrectly are displayed. The boys can choose the different operations and also the level of difficulty. Your son's teacher may at times set a particular operation or level of difficulty for homework.
As the app allows for multiple players, parents can also sign in have a go and try to beat their own best time or score.
Mental mathematics takes a lot of practice. Little and often, with a variety of resources is definitely the key.

Book Survivor
Hello from the Library. I hope you have enjoyed the break, read hundreds of great books and also enjoyed quality time with your children (who also read hundreds of books I'm sure).
This is the term when Book Survivor comes to Scotch College Junior School. Book Survivor is an initiative aimed at building connections and commonalities between the staff and students through picture books. This year the Junior School staff are encouraged to choose their favourite illustrator from past or present times. The students have to vote out one illustrator (book) each week, until only one book remains. The staff member who chose this illustrator will become the Book Survivor!
The other part to the competition involves the students making their predictions on which teachers chose which illustrators. They can be as investigative as they like and tricking the staff into an answer is certainly within the rules. The student who correctly guesses the most illustrators to teachers is also declared the Book Survivor!
At the end of the term both the teacher associated to the winning book and student who has guessed the most books to teachers are announced at Assembly and will receive a gift each (I wonder what that might be).

Variety in Middle School
Middle School boys have enjoyed some high profile recognition in the last two weeks with the Scotch Youth Voices performing at the Fairbridge Festival, and a group of Year 6 boys along with the Premier at the opening of the new Gold Exhibit at the Perth Mint. Moments in the spotlight such as these are enjoyable, however behind the scenes in Middle School this term is a small project that that will hopefully gain momentum and student interest.
At Assembly last Friday, Variety - the Children's Charity spoke to us about an initiative they are developing to help children immersed in domestic violence settings. The initiative involves the creation of an iPad application that gives children living in these settings the ability to call for immediate help and to also access a bank of strategies on how to broaden their own response, management and coping mechanisms in these situations. Variety is hoping to raise money towards the purchase of 39 iPads that will have this new application installed. Each iPad will be placed in one of the domestic violence 'safe' houses throughout the state. I look forward to sharing more with you over the course of the term on how our boys respond to this issue and presentation.
Winter Sport
Winter Sport training and fixtures commenced last week and will run into next term. I hope you can make it to one of your son's fixtures this season as I know every boy gets a thrill and lifts himself just that little bit more when you are on the sidelines. Your support is equally important and appreciated by boys playing in the fourths team as it is for boys in the firsts. Weekly fixtures with venues can be found via the parent page at home.scotch.wa.edu.au
One of the central outcomes we hope to achieve through our Sport programme is the joy in participating in a team and the importance of commitment and persistence to the team when things look bleak or the other team is bigger, faster or more skilful. Success isn't always measured by goals, points or scoring shots. The development of the ability to work cohesively as a group, to understand that 1% efforts are valuable although infrequently recognised and that improvement, not necessarily winning, is a greater measure of success. Along with fitness and skills, these are the important attributes that underpin our Sport programme, and are attributes that can be carried beyond the sporting field and into school, social and business life.
Reporting
At the end of this term as part of our Semester Reporting process we invite parents into the classrooms for the boys to do a walking-talking tour of their learning environment. Work portfolios are then taken home with the Semester report following at the end of term. At the commencement of Winter term we commence a goal setting exercise that helps boys focus on two or three aspects of their performance that they wish to or feel they need to develop. It is a valuable exercise based on detailed information presented through the reporting process.

Middle School Production - 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin'
In Week 9, the cast of 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin' performed three shows to a captivated audience! With a playful bunch of characters, the students and I worked hard to produce a humorous and uplifting tale, while staying true to the story's original theme. The energy and commitment of the students involved was contagious, and became the driving force in the success of the production. For many students this was their first production, and it was heartening to see each student displaying professionalism and dedication to all aspects of the process.
Thank you to all students, teachers and parents who were involved in 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin'. Your ongoing support of the Drama department at Scotch College is highly valued, and congratulations once more to all the students involved!

Musical Moments in Middle School
It has been full steam ahead for the Middle School Music students at Scotch. The roll out of the Year 6 Concert Band Programme went very smoothly at the beginning of the year. The Year 6 boys have worked well within their ensemble and performed a selection of concert band pieces in a variety of styles ranging from Spanish, rock through to traditional hymn songs. The Year 7 students have begun their unit of inquiry about Australian music. They have performed Australian music within their classroom ensembles and have had the opportunity to research information about famous Australian musicians who have had a significant impact on the Australian music scene.
The Scotch Youth Voices have recently returned from the Fairbridge Festival Tour where they gave an incredible performance alongside Mr Andrew Winton to a very enthusiastic and appreciative audience.
Autumn Term is going to be very busy for the Middle School Music students. The upcoming Music Camp on June 3-4 will be filled with rehearsals, workshops and performances for all of the music students to participate in. The highlight of this term will be the Middle School Music Concert where the musical talents of the various Middle School boys will be showcased.

Holiday Experiences
A feature of the first week back at school has been the stories and experiences boys have shared from their holiday break. Some of these experiences include walking on burning coals in Indonesia; visiting Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison; walking across the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City; or attending the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Villers-Bretonneux, France. All of these experiences were part of different Scotch College tours. In addition to the four international tours, boys studying drama travelled to Sydney to the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and boys preparing for the commencement of the PSA football season travelled to Melbourne as part of a football tour. I encourage parents and visitors when next on the Senior School campus to take a few moments to watch the images that appear on the digital signs near the Dickinson Centre, Foundation Theatre or in the Gym to get a sense of the wonderful opportunities available to the boys. All tours planned for 2015 have been included further below to assist families considering tour opportunities for 2015.
Senior School Assemblies for Autumn Term will be held in Weeks 1, 4, 8, 9 and 10 due to Year 11 and 12 WACE examinations (Weeks 2 and 3) and the Senior School production (Weeks 6 and 7) requiring the Dickinson Centre. In the weeks where Senior School assemblies cannot be conducted, an alternative programme has been developed that includes guest speakers for different year groups. A highlight of this programme will be a presentation from Professor Brian Schmidt, Nobel Prize in Physics, 2011, in Week 3, 16 May.
The commencement of a new term is an ideal time for boys to reflect on the past term, set new goals, both in and out of the classroom, and start with renewed determination. I wish all boys well for the term ahead and look forward to watching the boys continue to develop, achieve and be rewarded for their efforts.

Thomas Gajewski Cricket Honours Citation
Thomas was an integral part of the Darlot winning team of 2014, playing the role of both an all rounder and the vice captain. His stats stand alone as some of the best in the last decade at Scotch for a single year. Scoring 331 runs for the Darlot season at an average of 46.2 and well above 50 when taken on first innings performances alone. Similarly, his bowling average was a respectable 29 for a spinner and he took crucial wickets in games against Aquinas and Wesley.
What is so special about Thomas' season is that he was often called upon to score quick runs in numerous innings throughout the season where he was required to play high risk shots to achieve this for the team. More importantly, in at least 3 of the 7 matches played, Tom batted with great discipline when matches were in the balance to guide Scotch to first innings wins. It is fair to say that without these crucial batting performances, Scotch may well have lost these matches.
Thomas has been a part of the Scotch 1st XI for 2 years obtaining Colours for both the 2013 and 2014 season. He was a consistent performer last year however matured vastly in this Darlot season to be a match winner. His game winning innings of 74 against both Christchurch and Hale showed not only his immense talent but also his calmness at the crease. He was also one of the leading runs scorers in the competition. Tom also took crucial catches throughout the year, as his fielding in the covers was trustworthy and elite. It is for these reasons that Tom is a worthy recipient of Honours for Cricket.
As a result of all this the WACA have approached him for the state 19s next year.

Lach Pethick Water Polo Honours Citation
In 2014 Lach was Captain of the Scotch College 1sts Water Polo team. This season he was the highest goal scorer and best player for the team in both 2013 and 2014 being awarded the Fairest and Best player two years in a row. This was in spite of the fact that Lach was identified by opposition teams for being an outstanding player, which resulted in him being double or triple teamed frequently. He led by example with great training work ethic and game day performances. As captain he was an inspiring leader for his peers and a fine role model for the junior players in the team.
In 2013 Lach was invited to attend a training camp in Shanghai with the Chinese National Team. Lach was selected for the UWA Torpedoes men's national league water polo team in 2013/2014 and was awarded the 18 and under Most Improved Player for this team. He was selected in the under 18 state and national teams as a key player. He was also selected in the Men's 18 & Under Club National Championships Team - UWA Torpedoes in both 2013 and 2014. Lach is a worthy recipient of Honours for his outstanding achievements in Water Polo.

The French Club in the Middle School
On the last Friday of Term 1 we again held our French Breakfast from 7.30am - 8.30am. By 7.45am we had a pleasant and interesting mélange of people attending - mums, dads, students and teachers and by that time all Croissants, Baguettes, Crêpes and Hot Chocolate had 'disappeared'! Some mums started making more Crêpes - creating a real sense of community and belonging, while at the same time identifying with and supporting the French Breakfast and French as a language. Please feel free to come along to the next one!

They will also share a cultural exchange with Native Americans and perform at the Chumash Native American Museum. They are busy fundraising for the trip and are holding a special fundraising dance performance at PLC on May 10. Your support would be most welcome.
