Headmasters ReflectionsHeadmaster's Reflections

Welcome to the final Thistle for 2013.

Recently, I spoke at several forums regarding the concept of a community giving back. In addressing this topic I emphasised that the Christmas period, as we understand it, can quite often be the worst time of year for a lot of families; where those from less fortunate backgrounds may feel a heightened sensitivity to the reality of their personal situation. As such, it is important that where possible we take every opportunity either individually or collectively to give back to those in our community who may face challenges and hardships that we may never have to endure. One of the great things about the boys at Scotch from Years 1 - 12 is their incredible sense of service and I know that they will make the opportunity to assist others in whatever means or way possible.

Congratulations to all of our 2013 graduating Year 12s who celebrated their Valedictory Dinner on Friday night. It was a fitting way for us to acknowledge the role they have played in leading our student community and I know that on behalf of everyone we wish them well with their examination results and their chosen paths in 2014. In particular, I would like to thank the Mothers' Auxiliary for the role they played in making the night such a huge success.
This week marks a week of great celebrations for our College in the form of our Junior School Presentation afternoon and the Middle and Senior School Speech Nights. Yet again these events offer us the opportunity to celebrate everything that is great about our College. In particular I would like to wish our Year 5s and 7s all the very best as they transition to Middle School and Senior School respectively.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their ongoing support and commitment to the education and development of our boys. There can be no more important role in society than shaping our future leaders. Furthermore, to everyone who has volunteered or has carried out work on behalf of the College thank you. The level of voluntary support is what continues to make us different at Scotch.
Finally, on behalf of my family and myself I would like to thank you for your support and I look forward to another exciting year ahead.

All School Matters

Our College campuses received a timely upgrade thanks to the generous assistance of the Parents Association who had the foresight to see the need for well identifiable waste stations around the school. These products are made of recycled plastic hence reducing their footprint. While are aesthetically pleasing they serve a very specific purpose: reducing Scotch College's waste footprint. Unsurprisingly with anything new, there are a few teething issues with the bins needing to be used effectively. With the right information and proper education every one in our community can make the right choices. Boys need to put any recyclable product (such as empty plastic bottles, milk cartons, cardboard, paper or aluminium cans) into the yellow bins. All other general waste (such as food, glad wrap and metallic or flimsy plastic packaging) should go in the red bin. The same concept has been introduced in the library. The attached pictures illustrate this in more detail. A little common sense is needed to make this work and every student's contribution in respecting our campus is not only appreciated, but very much expected of a Scotch boy.

Uniform Shop

Year 7 Boys

Your son will have most of the uniform required for Year 8, but he will need a few extra items for next year. To avoid having to queue in the Uniform Shop at this busy time of year, we encourage you to make an appointment. Please email uniform@scotch.wa.edu.au or phone 9383-6838 to set up a suitable time during December. Appointments for current Year 7s moving to the Senior school will only be taken for this year. Appointments are not available in January 2014 for boys who are already at the school.

Secondhand Exchange

The Uniform Shop accepts all current items of uniform for resale. All items should be clean. Blazers must be dry cleaned and in good condition. A frayed cuff, worn elbows, very old crests, rips & tears on blazers make them unacceptable for resale. Items will be purchased from you outright as long as they are in good condition and the shop is not overstocked. The exception is the older style blazer, which we will sell for you on a consignment basis. Bathers, hats, socks & restricted sportswear are not accepted for resale, but will be donated to charity if handed in.

Year 12 Blazers

Year 12 blazers are available for sale. Because of the unknown nature of the overall size of Year 12 boys and to avoid disappointment, it is recommended that you come in for sizing ASAP. It is advisable for a parent or guardian to accompany the boy when purchasing.

Holiday Opening Times

During the holidays there will be days available for kitting out new boys on an appointment only basis. Please email the uniform shop for details (huntih@scotch.wa.edu.au).

The Uniform Shop opening hours for the general school community during the holidays are as follows:

Community and Service

A Year of Service

As year-end approaches, it is satisfying to reflect on the good work done by boys throughout the College. Whether the service has been organized by school or not, formally recognized or completed quietly without being noticed, boys should be proud of their achievements this year. At a recent reception for our external partner agencies, it is clear that the impact of Scotch boys within the broader community is considerable. The agencies love our boys! Boys who visit aged care facilities, work with intellectually and physical disabled, befriend refugee students, take part in environmental rejuvenation or a engage in multitude of other service activities help to put a caring face on our school. More than that, they do serious work among the less fortunate. They in turn learn life lessons and are transformed: sometimes just a little; sometimes considerably. I would like to thank all the organisations and agencies that have accepted our boys this year. Thanks must go to the Scotch staff who have accompanied the boys and ensured their care and the quality of the experiences.

Disabled Surfers Event

The first of the Disabled Surfers (DSA) 'Lets Go Surfing' events for the summer takes place at Leighton Beach on Saturday November 7. Scotch boys have attended every DSA event in Perth since 2007. Multitude of boys will agree that participation at disabled surfing has been one of the most memorable activities during their time at Scotch. It is a unique way to support the disabled community and being a coastal school with students who surf, an ideal fit with our community. For more information on the forthcoming event see here.

Service Project Fundraising

Fundraising for charities or school-initiated service projects is a perennial activity throughout the College. The boys involved driving the fundraising are genuinely excited by the prospect of raising money that will make a difference somewhere in the world. Collectively, the amount raised each year is in multiple thousands of dollars. Through hard work such as, making biscuits, running games, selling hotdogs or hosting Quiz Nights, boys get a sense that is possible to materially changes lives. Our community is generous. It is important that boys have success in fundraising and that the lessons about how the money is used are learnt. Philanthropy according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is: 'the practice of giving money and time to help make life better for other people'. We want our boys to grow up investing time and money is charitable causes. We want them to witness the generosity of their parents in supporting charitable causes. Thank you for your support this year.

Music Department

As 2013 comes to a close I would like to take this opportunity to thank all boys, Instrumental and Music classroom teachers and parents for everyone's efforts this year. It has been an amazing journey that has provided excellent teaching and performance opportunities in a wide range of situations. I am looking forward to seeing many of our musical boys on stage for the three Presentation Assemblies / Speech Nights. A full report on the musical year will be published in the annual Reporter magazine.

The 2014 Music Handbook has been created and it can also be accessed via the Music Department online wiki. As no enrolments carry over into 2014, I strongly encourage all boys who are considering instrumental lessons at Scotch College next year, to complete the appropriate enrolment form by the end of November and submit to Music Administration via email music@scotch.wa.edu.au

https://ishare.scotch.wa.edu.au/groups/thevmdthevirtualmusicdepartment

Finally, if you are interested in supporting the work of the boys and teachers involved in Music at Scotch College, I encourage you to say hello to the Friends of Scotch Music support group via email FOSM@scotch.wa.edu.au This parent group meets once or twice a term to organize the supper and front of house areas in preparation for concerts. A very important group of parents who have supported music at Scotch for many years.

This gala Perth Symphony Summer Proms concert is a magical night of symphonic music under the stars and features the world-class Perth Symphony Orchestra joined by many incredible guest artists, and also by the Scotch College / PLC Choir and Scotch College Pipe Band. It is a night of moving music on an epic scale. Our whole family loved it and can't wait until its on again"

Head of Junior School

As we approach the end of the 2013 academic year I reflect on a wonderful first semester at Scotch College. Many outstanding events have brought the school community together and showcased many of the excellent attributes of our college and the boys. I want to thank my colleagues in the College for making me feel welcome and at home. I also want to thank the parents of our school for the support they have provided the Junior School and the wonderful things they do for the boys and the school. Last Wednesday we celebrated our annual Junior School Christmas lunch, an event that would not have been possible without the dedication of the Mothers' Auxiliary. The dinning hall looked amazing and the boys enjoyed a feast prepared by the catering staff and served by their mothers, and a visit by a special guest in a red suit.

Farewells

At this time of year we say farewell to some colleagues. Mrs Andrea McNally leaves us after seven years of outstanding service to take the helm of the Junior School at St Hilda's Anglican School for Girls. I want to personally thank Mrs McNally for the support and guidance she has provided me in my in start at Scotch. She is an outstanding leader and a brilliant colleague and I will miss her sense of humour and professionalism. I also want to wish good luck to Mrs Anna Clancy who will begin her maternity leave at the end of the term. I wish her all the best with the new member of her growing family.

New Staff

In 2014 we will welcome new members of staff to our talented team. I am pleased to announce that Ms Penelope Hooper will join us as the new Deputy Head of Junior School for administration and pastoral care. Ms Hooper comes from the state system and has extensive experience as a deputy in primary and secondary schools. She is a talented teacher and an excellent school leader. Her skills will be an outstanding addition to our team. Mr Stuart Mann, Ms Rebecca Tapscott and Mrs Susan Phillips will be new teachers in our school in 2014. I am sure the College community will make all of our new members of staff feel welcome.

Head of Academic Support

The Junior School has been very fortunate to have had Mrs Merrie Cockerill in the position of Head of Academic Support for past 5 years. Whilst Mrs Cockerill will be remain working with the team she will be stepping down from the position at the conclusion of this academic year. Consequently, we are very pleased to announce that Mrs Janet Lopez has been appointed to oversee this essential department of our school. Mrs Lopez will manage the academic support program across the school and guide the support and extension programme in all year groups. Her outstanding abilities as a teacher will now benefit all our boys.

Semester two reports will be sent home during the week of 9 December. The date has been put back in order to provide teachers with more time to complete units of inquiry prior to reporting on them. Teachers will be available via email to answer any queries parents may have regarding the reports.

2014 Meet the Teacher Evening

Meet the Teacher Evening for new parents is scheduled for Wednesday 5 February, beginning at 6:00pm in the MacKellar Hall. This will be followed by a session in your child's class to hear about expectations and procedures for the school year from the new class teachers. Following the class meeting, parents are invited to a supper in the Dining Hall.

2013 Reflections

A full academic year is almost behind us, it's time to pause and reflect. 2013 was busy! Busy, productive and hugely enjoyable. My firm impression after my first 12 months is that Scotch is a great place to work and learn. It is an incredibly supportive learning community for all, which is reflective of the type of community advocated by the IB.

The boys have worked hard throughout the year and we have watched them grow in so many ways. We are proud of our boys and their learning.

The staff have also worked hard throughout the year, collaborating across the Junior School to ensure each boy is receiving the best holistic education we can offer. It is a privilege to work with such a passionate and dedicated group of professionals.

As this is our last newsletter for the year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Year 5 boys all the very best for their exciting journey into the Middle School and the IB Middle Years Programme.

I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and I look forward to seeing you all in 2014.

Multicultural Experiences at North Balga Primary School

The Year 5 boys had the exciting opportunity last week to travel to North Balga Primary School as part if their unit of inquiry, 'Where we are in Place and Time', in which we are looking at the different reasons why people settle in areas across the globe. The North Balga students put on various cultural activities for the boys, including Burmese songs, Indian dance, Poi dance, Russian folk songs, African drumming, and the Haka. The Scotch students are also studying refugee movement, and we were fortunate enough to hear two-first hand accounts from parents of North Balga students about their experiences in refugee camps and their long journeys to Australia. It was an emotional and informative day in which the students were grateful for the opportunity to mix and share stories with their North Balga counterparts.

Art News

Another year rapidly coming to a close... and it's been a great year for Art!

Year 1 have just finished decorating beautiful terracotta pots to provide a home for the plants they have been growing in their classrooms. Their herb drawings are meandering and quite advanced for young students, and the boys have learnt first-hand how an artwork can be both functional and decorative.

Year 2 are putting finishing touches on decorating the large Good Sammy's bin that will be located on the school premises for the community to access. While they have been rotating on working on the mural, back in the Art Studio they have been creating wonderful collages inspired by Lucy Cousin. They make me smile every time I look at them.

Years 3 are embellishing their African mask totems, which are so simple and yet so effective. Sometimes the less you do with an artwork, the more dramatic the end result! It is fantastic to be able to learn from other cultures, and to explore the use of different media and tools to simulate an artwork from a different culture.

Years 4 are experimenting with different mark making techniques and combinations of materials to create collages of a fascinating bird. They have looked at the style of artist Karlee Rawkins to guide the development of their collage. The freedom to play and explore, within the structure of an art activity, allows the boys a chance to learn from others whilst expressing their own ideas at the same time.

Years 5 have finally pulled together our package to send to Africa. The boys have written an introductory letter, prepared a video clip that communicates aspects of life at Scotch and in Australia to share with the students in Ghana. The clip includes school grounds, boys at work, boys at play, Australian flag raising, interviews, musical excerpts, reflection of the artwork process, and more. After being inspired through a Youtube clip by Aba House students, we are now reciprocating sending calico bags that the boys have printed with their own symbol and then decorated; filling the bags with laminated posters of their specific Australian animal, marbles and other card games, as well as a few resources. It will hopefully be a wonderful exchange and surprise for the students of Aba House when they receive the package in the post! It feels good to be able to give and share in an educational yet fun way.

Enjoy the break. There will be plenty of arts opportunities to engage with over the holidays with many arts bazaars, festivals, music concerts, and puppet plays to name a few, so keep your eye on the news and papers to find out. I would love to hear from the boys after the break about their experiences.

All Art Folders are coming home this week and need to be emptied and returned before the end of year, ready to use for 2014 (except for the Year 5 boys). All visual diaries can now be kept and used by boys as sketchbooks at home.

Performing Arts News

As we draw near to the end of this year, I have been doing a little reflection on the inaugural year of Performing Arts at Scotch Junior School. I am just so proud of how the boys have embraced the new experiences presented to them with such open-mindedness. I have had a wonderful year getting to know all of the boys and discovering where their passions and talents lie. Over the past couple of weeks the boys have engaged in a little informal reflection themselves, letting me know which activities they enjoyed most and what they would really love to do next year. Surprisingly, not much has changed since our first discussion at the beginning of the year! The boys still love to play drama games, although they have become a lot more focused, which of course is a skill we aim to build on through the use of these games. Another passion for the boys is dance and movement, which might not be surprising, however it has been exciting to see how enthusiastic the boys have been in expressing their love for this subject.

I'd like to wish everyone a safe and happy summer holiday and I look forward to seeing you all in 2014 for what I'm sure will be another exciting year in Performing Arts.

Cyber-bullying leaves a trail

Many young people are unaware that everything they say and do online leaves a 'digital footprint' and although they may have deleted a message, picture or website, this can never fully be deleted.

If your child has been cyber-bullied, here are a few tips for how you can save and report the evidence:

Mobile phones: download and print the message or take a photo of the message on the screen with your camera. For nuisance calls or messages you can contact your mobile phone service provider and for threatening calls or messages, contact the Police.

Online content: If content is posted on a website you need to contact the website directly. Most social networking sites (e.g.: Facebook, Twitter, MSN) have pages where you can report 'inappropriate' behaviour. Alternatively you can find more information of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) website at: http:// www.cybersmart.gov.au/Parents.aspx

1:1 iPads for Years 1 to 4 in 2014

Once the boys have left for their summer holidays, the Scotch staff remain for Professional Learning. Junior School staff will be working with Jenny Jongste, an Apple Distinguished Educator, who will train the staff in the latest apps and how to use the iPads to support the boys with their learning.

Just a reminder that the iPads will be leased from the school next year, so some parents may need to let Santa know that an iPad won't need to be in your son's stocking this Christmas! All the boys in years 1 to 4 will receive their iPad in the first few weeks of school next year. It will feel like Christmas has come again to the Scotch Boys in Weeks 3 or 4 of Summer Term, 2014!

French News

The Year 4 classes have been hard at work preparing presentations on sports that are popular in French-speaking countries. This project offers boys the opportunity to utilise skills learned this year in French class, including using a bilingual dictionary to research the appropriate translation to best describe their sport. A secondary focus of the assignment is to develop a greater understanding of the cultural aspects of these French-speaking countries.

Hello from the Library. We are getting very close to the time when Santa comes to town and Rudolph gets a little bit of a hard time from his peers. So go to that large dusty box kept in the garage or under the stairs and pull out your decorations, Christmas tree and various tangled lighting arrangements in preparation for the big event. And while you are at it why not search out those overdue books and get you son to return them to the Library in order to win a mystery prize (no money back guarantee on that sorry). I would also like to say a very big thank you to Jenny, Alison, Susan, Kaye and Kendra for all of their help this year. It made the library a fun place to be as well as allowing Mrs McNally the opportunity to eat A LOT of yummy foods as part of the Jenny Bateman Baking Academy Development Program. Have a safe and relaxing Christmas break and we'll see you all in 2014.

Below are some great reading selections for you and your children to enjoy over the break. Remember to go to the school Home Page, then Library, followed by Overdrive, should you want to download a copy of a favourite read over the Christmas break:

Staff Movements in Middle School

Our final Middle School Assembly held last Friday was a delightful opportunity to recognise boys who have applied themselves in the manner and ethos of the International Baccalaureate Attitudes and Learner Profile. A full list of the boys who received book awards is included in the Student Awards section.

Staff movements in the Middle School at the end of this year and the commencement next year include Mr Stuart Shirley who has been at Scotch College for four years and now returns to Queensland and takes up a position at Brisbane Grammar School's Middle School. Mr Shirley also gets married during the holidays and we wish him all the very best for these three great adventures. It is important to acknowledge Mr Shirley's role in the development of our Middle School in the areas of iLearn and English, and his input in the areas of Rugby, and co-curricular activity. Ms Deborah Mullin will move from Year 6 to 7 in 2014 replacing Mr Shirley. We warmly welcome a new teacher in Year 6, Mrs Sophie Berry who comes from Floreat Primary School. Also departing at the end of this year is Mrs Anna Couzic who goes on Maternity Leave for twelve months. Replacing Mrs Couzic will be Miss Emma Payne who will teach Drama to Years 6, 7 and 8.

Student Reports and 2014 Class Lists will be mailed out to parents following Speech Night. Teachers will continue on campus until Wednesday 11 December should parents need to discuss any concerns. Students return to school on Tuesday 4 February 2014.

I look forward to seeing you all at Speech Night, an event that sums up what Middle School is all about as we witness the transition of boys from Year 7 Middle School into their Senior School Houses and Year 8.

I wish you all a pleasant and safe Christmas and a Happy New Year.

From the Head of Senior SchoolSenior School

The Importance of Family

Last Friday night we said thank you and farewell to our leaving Year 12 boys at the Valedictory Dinner. It was a wonderful night that began with a chapel service before moving to the Dickinson Centre for dinner. The venue was spectacular, being prepared by the Mothers' Auxiliary. The delicious meal prepared by our own Scotch catering staff and served by 78 boys in the current Year 12 cohort, was enjoyed by all 600 guests. The dinner began with a message from the Chair of Council, Mr Richard Goyder. He reminded us all of the importance of connection and the power of a simple gesture. As part of Mr Goyder's presentation, every boy in Year 12 hugged his parents.

The highlight of the night was an inspirational speech by Mr Bradley. He made us all laugh; boys, parents and staff, and he made us think. Mr Bradley, through his powerful story left us all thinking deeply about our futures and the importance of family. At this time of year, with Christmas now less than four weeks away, Mr Bradley's message about family could not have been more poignant. Both Mr Richard Goyder and Mr Matt Bradley left us appreciating the true meaning of family. At this time of the year I wish all families a happy and joyous time together and encourage all boys to express their appreciation and love for their family through simple, yet powerful gestures such as a hug or the expression of gratitude and love.

On a personal note, I thank the Scotch College community for making my first year one of great reward and experience. The year has been filled with highlights and will remain one I will remember fondly.

I wish all boys and their families a happy and holy Christmas.

Senior School Speech Night

Uniform Requirements:

Winter uniform for Leaving Year 12s

Summer uniform for all other boys

Senior School Lockers/Locks

At the end of each calendar year boys are expected to clear out their lockers prior to lockers being locked by the Maintenance Staff during the holidays. It is important that parents are aware of this as many uncleared items are removed and can be returned to the owners the following year only if they have been clearly marked. Some items go into lost property and others are discarded. All of this causes a considerable amount of extra work for those involved and possibly the loss by boys and parents of some unmarked items. It would be helpful if parents were to ensure their sons had cleared out their lockers and removed the padlocks by the end of term. Boys should retain their school supplied padlocks for use in 2014.

TOP

Finishing Time

The Senior School will finish after a brief noon assembly on the last day of term, Friday 6 December. Boys must clear their locker by that time.

Year 11 and Year 12 INFORMATION

Year 11 and 12 Course Changes

With the Spring Term nearing conclusion, it is an opportune time for students and parents to review student progress to date. In some cases students have already made course changes and these will be implemented ready for commencement in the Summer Term. During Spring Term teachers have had the opportunity to administer several tests and the results of these tests are an indication of possible success or otherwise in chosen courses. If a student is obviously not achieving in a course, it is highly recommended that he arranges to meet with Mr Frusher to discuss the reasons for this and to look at possible solutions eg change of course, change of level (mathematics), attend a study skills course during the holidays.

To ensure a smooth start to Summer Term, it is recommended that any changes be made as soon as possible with Mr Frusher who will be available until Tuesday 17 December. Mr Frusher can be contacted via Email: PFrusher@scotch.wa.edu.au or Tel: (08) 9383 6830.

Mothers' Auxiliary

Our busy year is coming to an end.

I would like to thank the many helpers we had to set up and help with Valedictory Dinner on November 29. Thanks to all the 2013 Year 11 boys who helped on the night, the dinner would not be possible without you. Special thanks to the 2013 Year 11 parents who gave up their Friday evening.

Our final Year 7 Transition Breakfast is on December 5 commencing at the Middle School Reception at 7.30. Many thanks to the Middle School representatives Jane Crump and Louise Jones for the mammoth task of organising this celebration.

Please check the Mothers' Auxiliary intranet site for photos of our recent events.

Could all the Junior School and Middle School Representatives organise their replacements for next year, we hope to get the guidelines booklet completed early in Term 1.

We require Middle School representatives for the Mothers' Auxiliary Committee and are still requiring representatives for 2014 for Years 11, 9 and 8 please email soniamwee@gmail.com if you can fill any of these positions.

We also require someone to take over from Nicki Berry who has been looking after the Mothers' Auxiliary Room. We thank Nicki for her many years in that job and it's going to be hard to replace her.

We also require a Vice President for Mothers Auxiliary for 2014. It would mean that you would be president in 2015. If you can help out in either of these positions could you email clairstanley@iinet.net.au

I would like to thank Sonia Wee and Lisa Gagiero for all their help and support this year. Our Mothers' Auxiliary couldn't work without them.

I am thinking about changing the times of the Mothers' Auxiliary meetings to the evenings and I welcome any comments either way about this change. We would still hold it in the Gooch Pavilion at around 7.30pm on a Monday or Tuesday night or even alternating between day and evening. Please feel free to let me know if this would be a good idea or not at clairstanley@iinet.net.au

Thanks to the Mothers' Auxiliary members for this year and I look forward to working with you all again in 2014, Merry Christmas and peaceful New Year.

From the President of the OSCFrom the President of the OSC

Year's end is always a time for reflection. 2013 has been an interesting incredibly full year, not only for me but also the Old Scotch Collegians. I joined the OSC committee during 2013 and was honoured to be elected its President.

For me personally one of the highlights was being able to participate on the selection panel of the P C Anderson scholarship committee which has the difficult task of selecting the son or grandson of an old boy as its recipient. James Walsh was the worthy recipient, and was amongst a group of young men who were impressive on every front.

If you need more proof that Scotch is turning out significant leaders of the future, this is clearly shown in the mix of OSC alumni who have been nominated in the Business News 40under40 awards. We congratulate OSCs Justin Gilmour (OSC '91) (MD of Integro Private Financial Consulting), James Baird (OSC '91) (Director of JustInvest Financial Planning), Jeremy Nunn (OSC '99) (Director of Health Safety Works), and Everest adventurer Patrick Hollingworth (OSC ' 94) (Director of Red Rouge Nominees) who have all been nominated.

I strongly believe that 2014 will be seen as a significant year for the evolution of OSC. Our alumni model is maturing and changing, and our Association is designing and taking stewardship of some significant contributions back to the College.

Ours is "A community for life" on that note may I wish all within our community a heartfelt safe and Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, I look forward with some relish to 2014 and the challenges ahead.
