Reading Choices

Reading is a dynamic and personal experience. Humans do it for a number of reasons - for pleasure, for learning, to pass the time. Whatever the reason, at any given time it is different for each of us. Even within the closest of families and friends there are different preferences for writing styles, genres, subject matter, length, font size and type, hard back, paperback, ebook, talking book, fiction or non-fiction. Reading is a very personal experience.

For this reason we have endeavoured to lay the Junior Middle School library out to best cater for the different preferences of the boys.

At the end of last term we moved the series books into tubs and created Junior Fiction series sets to cater for the boys ready to make the move from picture books to beginning chapter books. The boys like to link themselves into a series, read this and then move onto the next series. It is a joy to witness their enthusiasm as they find a series they enjoy and recommend this to others in the class. By arranging books by series we encourage reading mileage and build confidence.

An extension of this is the fiction collection being arranged by genre and again having the series books displayed in tubs to make it easier for the boys to locate books they enjoy by series and genre. Fiction arranged by genre is more user-friendly for students and plays to their reading preferences.

If you have not visited us in the new Junior Middle Library please come and have a look. Parents are also very welcome to bring their son's in and make reading choices together.

Happy Reading!
