Community and Service
Service Learning
Boys in the Middle School have been engaged in a number of service activities as part of a Friday afternoon programme. Homeless clients of St Patrick's Community Support Centre in Fremantle received a sweet treat in the form of cupcakes decorated with coloured icing that were baked on campus by Year 7 boys. A group of boys worked with Coast Care to weed the dunes and collect rubbish on Swanbourne beach. Other boys visited Bethanie House in Mt Claremont to play games with disabled residents. A further group went to Swanbourne Primary School to support Year 1 and 2 students. The Good Samaritan Industries processing centre in Canning Vale received a visit from both Year 7 and Year 10 boys. On two separate visits these boys toured the complex and then worked along-side disabled employees to sort donated clothing.
Global Health Conference Presentation
Nathan Schaff (Year 10, Anderson) recently spoke at the Global Health Conference 2015 held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. He spoke alongside Akram Azami - UWA Tutor and Young Australian of the Year 2013. Akram has been engaged by Scotch on Friday afternoon to work with boys in the 'MAD WORLD' (Making A Difference In the World) group - part of the Year 10 Service Programme.
Together Akram and Nathan presented to a large number of delegates on the topic 'Medicine, Culture and Open Defecation'. This was an example of the power of advocacy based on research, driven by a passion to make a difference. This form of community service - presenting ideas for change in a public and compelling manner is particularly suited to the mentoring undertaken by Akram. The presentation was very well received and provided a template for further advocacy on global national and local issues.
