Innovation in Learning

Commencing at Scotch College, it is clear that a community of innovative learning is well established. As I have engaged with the boys and their teachers across Junior, Middle and Senior School, the passion and energy driving this learning is infectious.

It is widely recognised that teachers share a significant responsibility in the education of our young people in Australia. As a profession, it is one that is continually evolving and adapting to the changing social conditions in which it operates. As suggested by American Educational Psychologist Lee Shulman, 'One never learns to teach once and for all. It is a continuous ongoing, constantly deepening process.' It is with this mindset we at Scotch continue on our never-ending journey to develop innovating teaching to drive innovative learning. As the boys learn, so do we as teachers.

To witness students in the Middle School playing the Stock Market during a lunchtime club activity or the boys in Class 6C performing as a class band for the first time to a public audience, it is inspiring to see the learning that has already occurred this year. Equally impressive was the commitment shown by the boys and the teachers who support them in The Residence, as they continue to give up their own time to develop their learning in a range of subjects.

At this time of year we shall also witness the wonder of the PYP Exhibition and the MYP Personal Project Showcase, both of which demonstrate the passionate learning that has taken place across the College this year.

It is these examples of student learning, the conversations I have had with teachers, and the introductions to parents within the Scotch Community that excite me about the personal journey I am entering and the opportunities to expand on the fantastic work that is already evident within the College.

I look forward to working with the boys, staff, parents and broader College Community to further develop teaching and learning at Scotch.
