Tournament of Minds 2014
Get creative. Think outside the box. Challenge the world. Put your Thinking Cap on. Do any of these statements sound familiar? Our Year 6 and 7 boys involved in the TOMs program for 2014 would certainly recognise them. They have been involved in a joint venture with PLC since the start of Autumn Term to help develop their creative problem solving skills as part of the Tournament of Minds.
Tournament of Minds is a national competition aimed at our youth to help them develop diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment.
The combined Scotch/PLC teams met every Tuesday afternoon since the beginning of Autumn Term, as well as the first six Saturdays of Winter Term, to work on a Long-Term Challenge centred around one of the following disciplines - Language and Literature, Applied Technology, Social Sciences and Maths Engineering. Each discipline outlined a different challenge and on Saturday August 30, each team presented their solution to those challenges to a panel of judges at Edith Cowan University, Mount Lawley.
Tournament Day at ECU was an exciting place to be as everyone finally had the chance to present their solutions that they had been working on for so long. It was a melting pot of different ways to solve the same challenges using a variety of homemade props and costumes. All Scotch/PLC teams represented themselves well and should be extremely proud of their efforts.
