Music Department

"Tell me what you listen to, and I'll tell you who you are." - Tiffanie DeBartolo

As mentioned in the last edition, the boys of the Music Department have received valuable feedback from the WA Schools' Festival adjudicators with additional recognition given to Big Band One through the presentation of a "Groove Award" which includes a $450 voucher to purchase musical equipment. The Combined Scotch College and PLC Symphony Orchestra received an "Excellent" Award for their performance at Churchlands Senior High School. Recently the Senior Guitar Ensemble also participated in the Festival, this time at Carine Senior High School, and this ensemble also received an "Excellent" Award. Congratulations to all those boys who participated in this State-wide competition and my thanks to all Staff who directed these ensembles.

On 18 August, Senior School cellist Matthia Au (Year 8, Alexander) had the pleasure of meeting cellist, performer and educator Aaron Minksy. At a workshop held at Shenton College, Matthia had the honour of playing a piece for him. Once all the invited musicians had performed, Aaron talked about making music fun by adding a variety of syncopated rhythms and other musical features. The next day, on the Sunday morning, Aaron talked about improvisation and he elaborated on the process of how by picturing something in your mind, you can then play what you think it sounds like. Congratulations Matthia on actively participating in what sounds like a very enjoyable and worthwhile experience.

Please note the upcoming events, in particular the Middle School Concert Band presentations to parents on Tuesday, 9 September.

Upcoming events include:

Tuesday 9 September, Middle School Concert Band Presentation to Parents, MacKellar Hall

Thursday 11 September, Junior String Celebration Concert, 5.00pm MacKellar Hall

Many of the events listed above are supported by FOSM. If you would like to join the Friends of Scotch Music (FOSM) - a group of parents who enthusiastically support the work of boys and staff in the Music Department, the process is very straight forward via the FOSM email below. FOSM meets once or twice each term with all meetings beginning at 7.00pm. Meetings go for approximately one hour, and are held in the Senior School Music Room with everyone welcome.
