Wednesday 25 April is a day when all Australians reflect on the blessing we have living in this great century. On this day we are prompted to consider the actions of those who have given their time and in many cases their lives to ensure that we continue to live peacefully in our beautiful country.
ANZAC Day 2014 was celebrated in the Junior School with our own service on Wednesday 30 April. Our Year 5 boys led the School in a moving ceremony. They shared with our younger students the origins of ANZAC Day and what it means to all Australians and New Zealanders.
The ceremony was carefully explained to the Junior School boys to assist them in understanding the reasons for and the context of each part of the service. They learnt about why we lay a laurel wreath at the foot of the flagpoles:
The laying of the wreath of remembrance has its tradition linked to ancient Rome where victors and those soldiers showing great bravery were presented with a crown woven from laurel. Today we lay wreaths woven from laurel on ANZAC Day to recognise the bravery of the men and women who died protecting our country and our freedom.
The Year 5 boys explained why we play the Last Post and Rouse to remember the fallen:
The last post is played to signify the end of the soldier's day's activities in Military tradition. The Last Post is also now used at funeral and memorial services as a final farewell and symbolises that the duty of the dead is over and that they can rest in peace. "The Rouse" is played at daytime services to signify that after the period of mourning, life and duty continue.
Our service reflected on the ANZAC Spirit that was born from courage, honour, endurance, and mateship; virtues that all of us should develop in ourselves.
The boys led us through remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to ensure we, and people around the world, enjoy freedom and security. I commend the Year 5 students for their fine role in sharing this special remembrance with our school community, and all Junior School students for their engagement in the service.
