Primary Years Programme (PYP)
Science in the Primary Years Programme
In the PYP science is viewed as the exploration of the biological, chemical and physical aspects of the natural world, and the relationships between them. In Junior School the teaching and learning of science takes place in our units of inquiry, which form our transdisciplinary programme of inquiry. The IB learner profile is integral to teaching and learning science in the PYP because it represents the qualities of effective learners and internationally minded students. The learner profile, together with the five essential elements of the programme-knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and action-informs planning, teaching, and assessment in science.
IB primary students in Australia demonstrate science literacy above and beyond national achievement scores:
Conducted by a research team at Deakin University, Melbourne, this new study suggests that compared to a nationwide sample of students, Australian PYP students achieve particularly well in science literacy based on Australia's national assessment program.
