Aquinas 61 defeated Scotch 25

The Scotch boys were keen for some payback after a six-goal loss to Aquinas College in the first game of the season and were confident as this time we would be playing at home. Unfortunately for us Aquinas came ready to play and the Scotch boys failed to match the intensity of Aquinas as they piled on four unanswered goals in the early going of the first quarter. Scotch was able to slow them down a little after that and were able to sneak a goal before quarter time from a nice snap from James Carrigg. The next three quarters were an arm wrestle. Aquainas dominated play again in the second but a determined defensive line led by Chad Perche and Daniel Paganin were able to hold them at bay and only conceded two goals in the second term. Scotch improved as the game went on and started to have a few more forward thrusts with good clearance work from Adam Brenz-Verca and Nic Crump. The boys lacked efficiency in the forward line and couldn't make the most of their opportunities. In the end Scotch had to suffer another six goal loss at the hands of Aquinas. Players of Game awards went to Nic Crump, Daniel Paganin and Chad Perche.

The 7B's played their best football against Aquinas last Friday and really showcased how far they have come as individuals and as a team this season. After being handsomely beaten in Round one by a taller and faster Aquinas team the goal was to play a tighter defensive game and run when possible. 7B's did this perfectly giving Aquinas a fright particularly in the third ad fourth quarters, eventually going down by 5 goals, a big improvement from Round 1. Captain for the Day Walker Daly led the team in effort all. Mark of the Day: Lewis Simpson, nice over head mark in the final term, Goal of the Day Chris Vann capping off a nice play from defense, Play of the Day Elliot Young, Max Bath and Bailey Flecker running, passing and marking the ball from half back to half forward in a smooth mark and run on strategy.

Scoreboard did not reflect the true amount of effort put in by our brave side. The Aquinas side was faster and stronger than the scotch boys but not at any stage did we back away from a contest and the boys throughly defended throughout. Our tackling pressure was again a highlight and the boys have displayed a tough brand of footy at the halfway point in the season. We still have a lot of room for improvement and I commend the boys on their continued positive attitude.

Scotch 50 defeated Aquinas 38

In what was a very physical encounter Scotch managed to come away with an emphatic and rewarding victory. Aquinas looked to match it with Scotch in terms of physical presence and hardness at the contest. Aquinas were clearly on top of Scotch at quarter time and was winning the contested ball which is an area that Scotch like to pride ourselves on. Scotch managed to settle and slowly start to regain the teams' physicality at the contest. After half time Scotch lifted and were able to break the game open through pure grit and determination. This rise in intensity really put Aquinas on the back foot. However, like in round 1 Scotch knew that Aquinas would come back strong. Aquinas started the last quarter full of run. Scotch was able to quell their dash and create stoppage after stoppage after stoppage. This style of play was really sapping for both teams. In the end a determined and disciplined Scotch team stuck to our plan and managed to come away with a pleasing and rewarding win.

What a game!Superhuman efforts from our keeper, Lachlan Meston, kept us in the game. Great saves from our defense and our forwards came back to help clear the ball. We had our chances and while we did not score any goals there are good signs that the team is becoming more of a team. Best game so far boys and I am looking forward to the next one. I am proud of the whole teams efforts this week.

Scotch started slowly and although we tried hard to get back in the game Aquinas would easily score again on a quick break. Shots on goal were about even but their goalie made many outstanding saves and when they attacked they did it quickly and were able to shoot with little pressure. It was the first time this season that our defense was under pressure and we will learn from the experience. Our tackles were soft and by playing down the middle too much we played to their strengths, resulting in too many quick turnovers in dangerous positions. Alastair Murray, Ollie Benson and Tim Reynolds worked manfully, Seb Evans continued his good form at left half and Tom Webb made several good saves.

We started strongly and dominated the game for the first 10 minutes. The intensity then dropped off a touch, and dropped even more when Aquinas scored their goal. We started poorly in the 2nd half, but played fantastic hockey for the last 15 minutes of the game and were unfortunate not to score.

The Aquinas first XI is unbeaten this year and their strength and power was too much for our young side on Saturday. Despite a brave second half effort we were unable to turn around the 0-3 half time scoreline. Jackson Ferri worked hard again and Lochlie Greenland was dynamic up front, on his first game back. WE continue to struggle to score goals and have now gone two games without success.

The Scotch 2nd XV had a tough game against Aquinas on Saturday. Short on numbers but not spirit the 2nd XV arrived at Aquinas with a number of 4th team footy players who had answered the rallying call of Mr Hales to help bolster the depleted 2nd XV. Coaching tackling technique and the laws of the game just prior to kick off was not ideal preparation for a game of rugby. However the regular players raised their game and lifted the footy boys around them. Technique can be coached but there is no substitute for commitment and all the footy players brought a good deal of this to the game. Lachlan Pethick was impressive with his direct running, Nick Todd tackled with vigour, Tyron Haberland filled the fullback role with aplomb, Will Marshall looked a natural rugby player and Jack Watterston caused chaos whenever he got his hands on the ball on the left wing. All showed a great deal of aggression and determination to bring a hard edge to the second fifteen.

After conceding the opening two goals of the game inside the first ten minutes, Scotch trailed Aquinas 2-0 at half time.

With a renewed work ethic and passion for the contest, Scotch worked tirelessly in the second half to control the majority of possession and dominate general play.

After scoring two late goals in the dying minutes, Scotch were rewarded with a hard fought 2 all draw.

The 9Ds beat Christ church 6-0 this week. After losing the opening games of the season, we've now won our last three. The Scotch 9Ds headed to McGillivray expecting a tough game after beating the Christ church 8Ds just 3-0 a couple weeks ago, but the boys put in another excellent performance to win 6-0. The goals were spread around with goals from Connor, Mitch, James, Pat and an excellent double from Antonio which was finished off by a 30 metre stunner. The defense was very good too with first time keeper Chris making a couple of good saves to preserve the clean sheet that he, Edd, Andrew, Mitch and Manus worked hard for. Very happy with the performance and a good way to send them off to Canberra!

In the Fourth A's Jack Godden began his singles with a loss 12/21. Unforced errors let him down. With support from his teammate Tom Woods, Jack won the next 2 sets 21/13 and 21/16. It came down to the last doubles game for the fourths, Aquinas won sealing the win.

After welcoming Aquinas and introducing the Scotch team Alasdair Skinner played the Aquinas number one. The game was of a very high standard and went to three set. Throughout the games both players congratulated each other when a good shot was played and were honest about line calls. Alasdair won in the decider 21/18.
