Hale defeated Scotch
7B's went down to Hale by 10pts on Friday in a game that moved from one end of the ground to another with smooth passages of play and some clever goals. It is noticeable how much improvement the boys have made already this season. Oscar Melsom was a revelation in the ruck, Chad Perche was uncatchable when he had the ball, Max Bath was at the bottom of every pack picking up a ton of kicks and Captain for the Day Thomas Ward led the team well from the half back line being first to the ball and tackling fiercely. Goal of the Day Chad Perche, a goal on the run, Mark of the Day Riley Thomas, Play of the Day Bailey Flecker, winning numerous 1 on 2 contests as the last man in defence.

Hale 3. 5. 23 defeated Scotch 3. 4. 22
A tough game with a good fight back from the boys. Being lead at every change the boys played hard to keep in touch with a good Hale outfit. The backline held up very well considering the amount of ball that was getting pumped into their area. Good tackling pressure kept Hale under the pump the entire game and the run forward through the midfield created some great rebound opportunities. Nick Pierson dominated through the middle of the field after he started well in the backline. Brennan Nichols Contested just about every ball that entered the backline and won more often than not. Nick Kirkham provided a good target up forward with long entry balls which allowed the small forwards to win it on the ground. Very proud of the lads, the game was all tied up with two minutes to play and Hale managed to take a great grab up forward and get a late point to decide the match. Looking forward to getting the boys amped up to rebound back against Trinity this week.

Hale 10.12 defeated Scotch 2.9
Scotch had a tough first quarter in which Hale were able to use the breeze and put our backline under pressure. Hale kicked a few goals early to establish a lead but Scotch was able to respond with one of their own. Scotch responded very well in the second quarter with the breeze, having six scoring shots to two, however, we kicked 6 behinds. This was telling, as Hale were able to put more scoreboard pressure on after half time. The game play was even for most of the quarter, however Hale was very efficient in front of goal and this scoreboard pressure resulted in Scotch panicking a bit and that played into Hale's hands. The mids and backs were trying to bomb long to ease pressure instead of more measured kicks to targets and Hals was able to maintain possession by sitting a couple of players behind the ball. In the final quarter, the game play at ground level was again fairly even, however, Scotch were not able to capitalise and kick the required score with the breeze which, by then, was always going to be difficult. As the final siren sounded, Scotch was left rueing missed opportunities in front of goal early, which would have allowed a more stable contest and better decision making later in the game.

the 10cs lost to Wesley 10bs 16 - 77. They tried hard all day and had some periods where they linked up superbly and really took the game to Wesley. They were very impressive in following structures we had worked on in training.

Scotch 14.14 (98) defeated Hale 8.13 (61)
The scene was set for an exciting top of the table clash against Hale School in an away fixture at Craig oval. Having 2 weeks off Scotch were slow to start with Hale quick out of the blocks applying scoreboard pressure. Scotch however were not out of the contest winning more than their fair share of the football and starting to apply their ability to make clean quick decisions in tight resulting in a shift of momentum. The 2nd and 3rd quarters saw Scotch control the football with precise clean ball movement from contests working their way from a deficit at quarter time to level pegging heading into the final quarter. The players ability to win the contested football, make the quick and right decisions with ball in hand, then control the game through use of their skill has been at the forefront for many weeks now, however it is the maturity of the group to understand that momentum in all games will consistently shift. The intelligence shown by the group of players to answer the questions; When we have momentum, how efficient and relentless can we be to exploit it and when they have momentum, how quick can we get it back came to prominence in the final term with Scotch players clean and selfless movement resulting in a win. The intellegent progression shown throughout the game coupled with each players willingness to compete irrelevant of the stage in the game or scoreboard emphasized that each individual is consistently striving to improve for the team.

Scotch 0 drew Hale 0
What an excellent effort from the team against a formidable foe, the Hale School. The game moved from one end to the other, shots at goal from both sides. Great saves form Lachlan Meston our goal keeper and an awesome defensive game from our Captain of the Day, Lachlan Cain, who was able to thwart many of the Hale attacking moves. Daniel Walker was moving the ball forward for our halves, Freddie Payne, Tom Nicholls and Angus Reeves, who were then able to link with our forwards. The forwards, Seb Chadwick, Tom Lewin and Cameron Murie were passing well between each other moving the ball steadily up the field. On the other side of the field great efforts from Adam Martin and Bryson Lee in the halves made the opposition think about what they were going to do and they often broke down the play. Harrison Burt and Darcy Frazer were linking well with the halves and consistently challenged the opposition. Hamish Bruce took on everything the opposition had to offer and was a constant threat to the Hale defence. The score was a good reflection of the efforts of both teams and I am really proud of our team who have struggled hard to improve a variety of areas of our game. Well done boys this was your best game this year.

Scotch 9 defeated Hale 2
The expected tight encounter between the two undefeated teams didn't eventuate, with Scotch combining brilliantly to eventually overwhelm the opposition. After 15 minutes the Scotch midfield took control and once the forwards found the target, goals came at regular intervals. Particularly pleasing was the outstanding ball use and the ability to open the game up by switching the play. As usual, Alistair Murray, Ollie Harding and Ollie Benson were hard working, dominant midfielders but all everyone played his part well. Michael Piercey played his best game so far at full back and Tim Reynolds was outstanding at right half, always making the right decision with his passes.

Christ Church 5 defeated Scotch 3
Hockey year 8C team lost to Christ church at McGilvray. Not sure what team we ended up playing. Scotch played well letting in some early goals but coming back to make it 2-3 at half time. With a strong performance in the second half scotch wasn't able to bring the game back in. Well played by both teams.

Scotch 5 defeated Christ Church 0
Scotch played a good overall game, especially in defense and in the midfield. Scotch needs to practice shooting however, we need to be able to capitalise on break away's from the pack. Tom Turner played a great offensive game and Jefferson Lee has greatly improved his hockey skills. The year 9's have also added a great benefit to the game, making the other team work a lot harder than in previous matches.

Hale put Scotch under the pump for the full 70 minutes, with Will Stewart's superb goalkeeping kept us in the game many times. We managed to score with 10 minutes remaining, and saw off more Hale attacks to finish the game with a 1-0 win

Hale 2 defeated Scotch 1
On Hale's super turf the 1st XI started slowly and turned over too much ball building from the back. Hale were quick in attack, and scored two field goals in 3 minutes to lead 2 -0 at half time. Scotch got better in the second half and began to dominate but a series of corners came and went with no result. Eventually a beautiful passing movement saw Tim Andrew tap the ball into to an open net but despite good chances we were unable to score again.

Scotch 54 defeated Hale 0
Coming into the game against Hale we knew that we would have to be at our best. Injuries and absences of key forwards meant that we weren't fielding our strongest XV, however, with the sounding of the opening whistle the boys hit top gear. Earlier that week we had spent some time developing a number of 4 phase plays intended to draw the opposition to one side of the field and then switch the ball in the other direction. However, strong picking and driving from the forward pack saw them break tackles regularly and subsequently threw our structure into disarray. Regardless, Scotch dominated the first half with early tries to fullback Josh Quartermaine, Connor O'Sullivan, all showing good determination and strength to break through the defence and crash over for 5 pointers.
During the second half the boys were far more clinical, the forwards were able to maintain possession and slick hands from the backs saw winger Lewis Bradbury touch down out wide. One of the many highlights of the second half was Lachie Phillips' break down the sideline, with only centimetres to spare Lachie was able to display excellent skill fending off the last tackler to score in the corner. Peter Stulpner also had a day to remember scoring 5 tries thanks to some very determined running and excellent service from inside centre Jamie Walker. What was most impressive about the game was watching the development of some boys who are in their first season of rugby. Jack Knobel, Fletcher Houston and Josh Quatermaine have seemed to take to the game like a duck to water and have now become integral members of the team. Special mention also needs to go some of the unsung heroes such as Hugh Edwards and Jamie Walker who I don't believe have missed a tackle all season. Well done boys on another dominant performance.

Game 1: Scotch 5-Hale 15
Game 2: Scotch 17-Trinity 10
This week Scotch featured in two mini games against Hale and Trinity. Lining up against Hale first, Scotch were slow off the mark and some early missed tackles allowed Hale to score early. Looking to bounce back Scotch started to work as a unit and some good runs from Ben and Ryan put the pressure back on Hale. Unfortunately some poor handling errors stopped our momentum and Hale used the space down the sideline to score. To Scotch's credit they fought back and some huge hits from returning player Jack finally allowed Scotch to post some points just before the end. In the second game Scotch was looking to bounce back against a big Trinity side. Scotch came out of the blocks like a team possessed and refused to let Trinity go anywhere with some crunching tackles and pressure at the ruck which caused several turnovers. This continuous pressure resulted in Ben stripping the ball in a tackle and running 50 metres to score in the corner. Trinity did not give up though and some slick passing led to their own try out wide. WIth the game in the balance Scotch responded with some strong runs particularly by Man of the Match Jack who broke several tackles to dive over the line and put Scotch in the lead. Again some shirt grabbing tackles allowed Trinity to square it up but with time almost up, Jack received the ball from a scrum and powered his way down the touchline to dive over in the corner to seal a win for Scotch. It was good to see the boys respond the way they did after a less successful first game. Everyone is coming along in leaps and bounds and we can't wait for the second half of the season.

Hale 14 defeated Scotch 5
After a bye week and an incredibly challenging encounter with the Barbarian Academy from Singapore it was back to PSA business for the Year 10's. Although the result was against the Barbarians was not as hoped the performance was extremely positive against a very skillful, physical side and for many the Barbarians will prove to be one of the best rugby teams our boys will play against. With this in mind, hopes were high for a positive performance against Hale and although the result suggests a close game, the reality was that Scotch, without playing near their potential, dominated long periods of the game but could not find the rhythm and fluency to finish off their opportunities. Hale very much started the better and dominated the breakdown in particular. It was no surprise when they crossed for the opening try and converted to take a 7 - 0 lead. Scotch worked they way into the game, when the boys stuck to their structures they had success but in a scrappy affair mistakes and turnovers were high and the stop, start nature of the game seemed to favor Hale. Eventually Scotch rumbled over from a maul to leave the half time score 7 - 5. The second half like the first was unstructured and the lack of policing of the breakdown hindered made it difficult for both sides to string phases together. Scotch made a number of line breaks and spent considerable time in the Hale 22m area but could not convert their chances. With 5 minutes to go Hale struck the telling blow when a knock on was not spotted, the ball was hacked through into the in goal area. Whilst most had stopped playing due to the knock the Hale centre ran through and dotted the ball down. Much to the surprise of everyone watching a try was awarded. The conversion taking Hale to a 14 - 5 victory.

The Scotch 2nd XV had a tough outing against Hale at the weekend. The Scotch team was depleted through injury and illness and we were grateful to Hale for lending us 5 of their players so that both teams could have a competitive game. Hale did not disappoint us as their powerful forwards and slick backs set them up for a few early tries. Scotch soon roused themselves and put some good passages of play together. Will Pemberton-Bennets led the team from the front and was ably assisted in this department by Fraser Murray and Michael Aitken. Fergus Walsh was looking dangerous in his first game at flyhalf making 3 good line breaks and unsettling the Hale defence. Just as he was looking dangerous he took a knock to the head and had to be substituted. This was a turning point in the game and Hale continued to press and were rewarded with a further try before half time leading 19 - 0. The second half saw Hale redouble their efforts and they ran in numerous tries. The Scotch team fell off tackles and were too high in the contact allowing Hale to offload and run into gaps at will. Fraser Murray was tireless in his defensive effort throughout and Digby Cornuel-Rees made some crucial defensive tackles in his first game at inside centre. This was a tough ask for a depleted Scotch team and they will need to gather themselves for the game against Wesley on Saturday which is shaping up to be a must win encounter.

Hale 61 defeated Scotch 8
Hale have always been very strong competitors in rugby, and they certainly lived up to this reputation against Scotch. While the Hale offence was very dominant, Scotch's defence seemed to have improved, and hung tough despite the lack of possession. Hale was far more experiencer, older and physically bigger, and were able to score several tries in the first half. The second half presented a much-improved performance from Scotch, they put Hale under constant pressure, by creating multiple scoring chances. Scotch kept them far from reach of their try line and their efforts were finally rewarded with a try from Vincent Carter. In the forwards the front row of Hans Taylor, Julian Sanders and Vincent Carter refused to reduce their effort despite the obvious size difference, and the loose forwards of Callum Dow, Angus McLarty and Damian Garbowski tackled themselves to a standstill. In the backs, Joe Sullivan performed well given that it was his first match as half-back at 1st level, and Alain Dutton was outstanding a fly half, and even managed to convert a penalty kick. The Grant twins in the centres refused to back down, despite a recent sickness, while Alex Geeson had his best game for the 1sts.

Scotch 2 defeated Hale 0
It was another tight tousle for the 7A's this week. Playing on the small pitch made us really think about trying to control the ball, having some great passes to run on to with enough pitch to gather it up. The game was scoreless in the first half with some great saves from both goalies. The smaller goal also saved a few great headers from corners going in. It was a great effort from all the boys with a couple luck balls sneaking through to give them the win. On a side note, they are really small pitches, if it is possible to line up other ones I know the boys will be more than grateful. (I understand if this in not an option though :) )

Scotch 3 defeated Hale 1
After conceding a goal in the opening minutes of the game, the B's regained momentum and control of the game to lead 2-1 at half time.
With the midfield saying on top during the second half, the B's scored a well deserved third goal to run out 3-1 victors.
A superb performance.

The Scotch boys were competitive for the first half, going in 1-0 down which was probably a fair reflection on the half. Unfortunately, we didn't sustain the same level of performance in the second half & were comprehensively beaten 6-0. I'd like to think that the boys will show more appetite for the battle when we next face Hale.

Goal scorers: Declan - 2, Tom - 1, Chatt -1
Created lots of chances esp in 1st half and unlucky not to be more than 2-0 up. Defence again not strong esp in 2nd half but there goals were well taken. Declan's header from a free kick [by Charlie] was outstanding. Used Scott. James and Giac Patroni in attacking/defending central mid-field role with all making solid running contributions.

Scotch 1 drew Trinity 1
Scotch 10C's drew 1-1 with the Hale 10C team. Hale only had 5 players and thus some talented year 8 boarders were called upon to even the numbers in order to enable a friendly kick around. We ended up playing 10 a side and it was a very even game and I'm sure all the boys had a good time and were grateful to the year 8's for helping out.

Hale 3 defeated Scotch 2
Scotch College 2 defeated by Hale School 3 In the toughest game of the year, 3rd place Scotch faced 2nd place Hale and the boys were unlucky to concede an early goal from a defensive error, however deservedly equalised soon after when a measured ball from Nishant Krishnan found Dean Millen-McDonald who finished well. Scotch controlled the 1st half and were rewarded again when a shot from Nick Steiner-Preis on a corner was deflected in by David Atwell. The second half was much tougher, with Hale coming out strongly and bringing the game to Scotch College. Another defensive error saw Hale equalise and with 3 minutes remaining, Hale scored again. A late chance fell to Scotch College in the dying embers of the game but was saved by the Hale goalkeeper on a day where Scotch were very unlucky. The boys put in a tremendous effort and played with great passion and determination to get a result.

Scotch 4 defeated Hale 1
Scotch defeated Hale 4-1 in a dominant display. Scott Webster, playing his first game of soccer for the year, was a welcome inclusion bagging a hattrick on debut. Tom Sherridan was a rock at centre back, reading the ball superbly and repelling any Hale attacks. Oscar Jungsted's reputation as the hard man of the team remains intact after throwing himself in for every challenge and scoring the first goal of the second half. A well deserved win.

Scotch 3 - Hale 0
The Scotch first XI preserved their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable victory at Hale but I couldn't help but feel we'd missed an opportunity to send out a message to all of our rivals. A missed penalty & some poor finishing throughout basically saved Hale from getting a real drubbing. I believe if we'd been a little sharper & more ruthless, we could have won 7 or 8-0 which is something that won't happen every year at Hale. On the positive side, goals from Harrison Patten-Williams & a penalty from Yanick Livingstone seen us reach half time with a deserved 2-0 lead, with Tom Gilmore only being called upon once in the Scotch goal & he responded with a great save. Scotch resumed the second half as the dominant side but just couldn't turn their dominance into goals. A Hale defender was sent off after Scotch were awarded a penalty, but this time Yannick had his shot saved. Alex Triglavcanin completed the scoring 15 minutes from time.

Once again the team put in a great effort on the difficult and demanding Hale course. In a very evenly matched race we were able to just edge out Hale, with runners from both schools sprinting to the line and giving everything to their team. Captain, Doug Foulkes-Taylor for the second time this year, broke the course record. He continues to inspire the team with his pre-run talks and gutsy runs. Doug, like Kyle Newman who ran his best race for the season in finishing 2nd, runs very hard from the start of the race, setting and maintaining a fast pace. Doug and Kyle, once again got great support from the team. Josh Jones, Denver Quantrill, Angus McLeod, Chase Deitner, Abe Potter, Arrigo Brackenridge, Campbell Shaw, Jack Varney, Harry Wiffen, Daniel Fletcher, Fletcher Wolpers and Ben Avery once again all ran courageous races. Without the Year 9 and 8 runners we would not have a team and indeed be so competitive. They represent the heart of the Senior Cross-Country team in 2013. Alex Smith, Cameron Green, Lawson Shaw, Max Locke, Dylan Fletcher and Tom Walker while not placing as high as other members of the team, are pushing themselves very hard and running great races. Once again I was very proud of the whole team.
