Scotch College 7B's started the game well with a goal from Ryan Marley in the first few minutes going into the first break with a small lead. By three quarter time Alex O'Mari has kicked four goals in a see-sawing games that saw us down by three points at the final change. Ben Karta was elusive in the forward line, Jon Marstall tigerish in defence and Elliot Young was putting on strong tackles all over the ground. In a close final term Lewis Simpson kicked the final goal giving Scotch a close hard fought four point win. Goal of the Day: Alex O'Mari a banana from the boundary line. Christ Church Grammar School started the game very well and placed Scotch under a lot of pressure early in the game. Scotch did win enough of the ball however, on the counter attack the Christ Church midfielders were dangerous and their forwards were able to get loose too often. At quarter time it scores were tied with both teams competing at the contest. Scotch had the assistance of a slight breeze in the second term and had more of the play. Despite having a number of scoring opportunities Scotch were still susceptible defensively and as a result Scotch only held a narrow lead at half time. The second half was most pleasing from the Scotch side. The midfield and defense tightened up and made it very difficult for Christ Church to get the ball past their half forward line. It was a tremendous response from all the players and as a result Scotch ran out 35 winners. Jack Monaghan continued his very good form and his positioning around the ground in the second half was a feature of his play. Connor O'Keefe and Austin Bantock played superbly across half forward in the first half giving a great contest. James McCormick again played well and it was great to see Hamish McKenzie take on board instruction and prove to be such an effective defender in the second half. Max Grant and Ben Avery again won plenty of the ball and it was great to see Lachie Simpson and Jakheen Coaby play so well in their first games.

A vast improvement displayed by the boys this week on the training track this week and this transferred through to the game on friday. Tackling and contested ball winning were the two focus points for the week and each was carried out in a pleasing manner. Against a team which was filled with a mix of Year 8 and 9's the boys effort could not be questioned and even though we didn't get the winning result the lads came off the field with smiles on their faces as they knew that had given it everything and that had matched it with the older opposition for the majority of the game. The shorter game led to a very low scoring game but a good win. Hale School struggled to get past Scotch's half back line with Scotch making the most of a long kicking and running game. A vast improvement of the boys putting their head down and over the ball. A couple of stand out talents came up with Jack Manners and Charlie Wanby leading in the middle of the ground and get the ball deep in the forward 50 with good run and carry finished with long kicking. Tom Krantz offered a good target up forward with a couple of good crumb goals coming from his contests. It was good to see the boys fight back after their first loss and plenty of players pushing for selection up in the 8B's or possibly A's.

Scotch had to work extremely hard for victory against a gallant Christ Church team. Scotch had to toil hard for a 2-goal lead at the main break. A slight change to our game plan the team came out firing in the 3^rd quarter and managed to break the game open. Long and direct kicking to the hot spot was the order of the day and worked well for the team with our big strong forwards creating contests and bringing the ball to ground for the small forwards. Scotch managed to finish the stronger of the two teams and came away with a win. Though not pretty, it was a strong and spirited win.

BEST: Coulson, Gooch, Coughlan, Jones

The Scotch seconds came up against the Aquinas College thirds on their home ground. The first quarter exemplified why attitude and application is paramount on any sporting field. The intensity and skill lifted in wet conditions during the second, although the boys allowed some soft goals late and went into the main break down by two points. Jacob Coulson was outstanding in the first two quarters and continued to show his application through the game. Scotch manages to kick away in the second half, applying much needed pressure in the middle and structure up forward. The momentum and skill level back on Scotch's terms, the boys managed to kick 15 of the next 18 goals to be clear 10 goal victors. A much more concerted and applied approach will be required for Guildford Grammar School.

Scotch 27.18 (180) defeated Christ Church 2.0 (12)

After a bruising first round Scotch was rather uncertain facing a team in Christ Church who were keen to bounce back after their Round 1 encounter. With the memo displaying slippery conditions the Round 2 clash witnessed scrambly play to the opening quarter as Scotch were more determined in forcing the ball forward than taking possession. With the runner sent out to address the change players quickly adapted to the contest and provided 11 scoring opportunities from clean ball movement into the forward line.

It was not until the second quarter where Scotch were able to assert itself around the clearances resulting in Christ Church dropping 2 spare players back in defense. With a settled midfield and staunch back line the volume of ball delivered to our forwards minimized the impact the spare players asserted onto the game.

Credit must go to the forwards who were continually restructuring their patterns, selflessly providing space and opportunity for their team to compete in a 1v1 contest.

Opening the second half Scotch were challenged to develop their structure, implement their knowledge of the game plan whilst maintaining a ruthless attitude leaving nothing behind on field. To witness the midfielders and backs continually develop their roles without getting caught up in the scoreboard will prove invaluable for the coming game and their personal growth. The result was pleasing however the intensity and leadership within each line marks a focus too often missing in teams.

The game started with a flurry with Christ Church Grammar School peppering our goal. Lachlan Meston did a great job as keeper, saving us numerous times but their barrage of shots were impossible for him to stop and they scored four goals in the first ten minutes. Then we started to get our act together and the ball moved from one end of the ground to the other. Scotch College scored the next two goals and began looking more like a team. Lachlan Cain and Hamish Bruce were more solid in defense and performed some very good tackles and were able to move the ball out of defense for our halves and forwards to go forward. In the last three minutes we fell away again and Christ Church scored another three goals. While we were defeated it was an opportunity for us to see what we can do when we focus on working together. I am pleased with the way we stepped-up and did not just give in to the better team on the day. Well done boys.

Scotch maintained a good tempo throughout and with direct, attacking and unselfish play eventually overwhelmed the opposition despite the heroic efforts of their goalie. All players were strong contributors but special mention go to Alistair Murray and Oliver Harding (sharing centre half and full back), Josh Pearson who was an ever present danger at centre forward and wingers, Tim Sewell and Ollie Repton for finishing off in the circle so effectively, sharing in ten of the goals.

Brilliant plays by Kerry Miller and Tom Turner, who played the roles of wing perfectly, which denied much time for Christ Church to work with the ball in attack on our own half, without the ball being sent back up the field. Preston Jemali, kept the tempo in attack, providing some huge hits, which was incredibly frustrating, as Scotch, was unable to work with these opportunities and score. However, by second half, Scotch scored the first goal, ecstatic, the level of competition had increase dramatically, and the boys started playing much more smarter, aggressively and with more discipline. Christ Church responded with equal determination, which lead to a one all draw, halfway through the second half. However, Kerry Miller in the last three minutes scored, just, under massive pressure to bring Scotch to a final score of 2-1.

A difficult game for the boys against strong opposition. The task was made harder with our back line missing. We went behind early in the first half and couldn't convert any of our chances, finishing the game with a 1-0 loss.

A great team effort! We scored an early corner goal when Jack Dowland waltzed past the oncoming defenders; Sam Bloodworth set up Tim Andrew after a lovely shot along the baseline run. A settling goal by Trench from a corner made the game safe but a late goal by CCGS after a goal mouth scrimmage did not upset the team. This was an encouraging effort and best players were Bloodworth, Taylor and Dowland. MacLeod worked very hard at inside forward.

Rugby

Scotch 69 defeated Christ Church 5

The display against Christ Church was one of the most comprehensive I have ever seen from a Year 7 rugby side. The game started in a flurry, with key players absent due to a commitment at Government House a number of boys had to step up and take the field in unfamiliar positions. It didn't take long for Scotch to open the scoring with a strong run by captain Sean Szalec, breaking the line and crashing over in the early minutes. This set the tone for the remainder of the match. The forwards dominated at the breakdown quickly securing the ball for the backs who constantly threated out wide. The forwards were also impressive during the srummages, winning the ball against the feed eventually forcing Christ Church to go uncontested.

As the game progressed the score continued to mount. Outside centre Peter Stulpner crossed for a total of four tries while Archie Capon also managed to scoot across following a quick line-out on the opposite side of the field. Some of the many highlights included a barnstorming run by Oscar 'The Bull' Lane and a beautifully worked pick and drive saw Jock Thompson cross for his first ever try. Jamie Walker was also impressive kicking 80 per cent of his conversions during the match.

This was a very dominant display against a side who tested Scotch last year, it is fair to say that if the boys continue in this manner we're in for an absolute blinder of a season.

Scotch started strong with some good pick and drive play from the forwards which led to a try to Aaron Alteridge. The backline were making huge metres as they cut through the Hale School defense without much trouble. Notable efforts came from Captain Ben Skelton and Nick Murphy who both picked up tries. Overall a much improved effort from the team across the field.

The local Derby brings with it early season bragging rights and the boys did not need reminding. Early pressure at the breakdown and some good ball skills saw Scotch defending hard for the first few minutes before breaking the flow of the game and scoring against the tide. Points started to come from then on, with a good attacking structure and strong support lines Ben and Mikey fed the boys for plenty of metres. Whilst the score indicates a bit of comfort, the truth is we where pushed hard by a determined Christ Church team with more accuracy at the breakdown and hunger in the tackle. Time for us to lift our focus here boys but an excellent defensive effort laying on a solid win. Well done to Max once more in the forwards and Darcy was excellent in the backs. Will Farr welcome back.

The Scotch 2nd XV displayed a great deal of character and commitment in going down to a very strong Christ Church outfit on Saturday. The Scotch 2nd XV showed plenty of character to steel themselves back into the contest through some strong tackling and plenty of determination. Michael Aitken in particular led the pack with an enormous defensive effort making numerous tackles throughout the game. Blair Gould shrugged off an injury and showed some fire defensively and in attack. The front row of Andre Chrstian, Siu-Dong Li and Hans Taylor stood up manfully in the scrum and challenged their opponents in the tight all day. Christ Church however, were just a little too strong. In the second half a redoubling of the Scotch effort and great work around the ruck and in the line outs saw Scotch produce a more competitive edge. Jordan McEwan, Fergus Walsh and in particular Digby Cornuel-Rees held Christ church at bay for a prolonged period with a huge defensive effort. Rob Steadman made some good runs forward, whilst Jonty Bean impressed in his first game of rugby as did Tom Darcy who filled in from football to help the critically low Scotch numbers this year. Scotch have got plenty of work to do going forward into the season. However, a good benchmark has been set and if the team is to move forward an enhancement of our effort and continued enthusiasm for the fray will see them progress throughout the season. A very tight tousle from the outset with no goals being scored in the first half, we had a number of close shots with none getting through. We drew first blood in the second half with a great cross then the finish by Lachy Richards. Christ Church then got the next two goals with a an individual effort by one of their players. We hit back with two goals from Josh Hook with the equaliser coming only minutes from the final siren. A great effort by the boys.

An inspired performance by the Seven B's soccer team who deservedly recorded their first win of the season. Goals from Frans Buys, Oliver Harrison and Lachlan Gresham enabled the B's to dominate the second half and control the majority of possession. Well played boys.

Our boys produced a much improved performance from the first game at Aquinas College and lost narrowly to a very controversial goal five minutes from time. Having fallen behind in the 1st minute of play, the Scotch team played their way back into the game & equalised shortly before half-time. Teo Brown produced a spectacular save in the second half to keep the scores even, but just as the game was drawing to a close the referee somehow managed to miss a clear offside from directly in front of the Scotch goal, resulting in a winning goal for Christ Church. The Scotch players should take great heart from this performance & look forward to the Guildford game this Friday.

The game was very animated right from the start. The Scotch boys dominated the first half. Ten minutes into the game, Kelton Mulvay managed to penetrate the Christ Church penalty area and score. Joshua Boyce, who was being very aggressive up front, scored a second goal to make the half-time result 2-0. The start of the second half, Christ Church boys sensed defeat, stepped up the tempo and nearly scored with a shot that hit the crossbar. However, the Scotch boys regained control of the game with some smooth and controlled passing. Scotch was awarded a free kick which Elliot Buzza took and scored an amazing goal. A much improved defensive display during this game saw no goals scored by the opposition. The overall quality of the passing was much better and with more training sessions, the team performance should further improve.The commitment shown by the Scotch boys in this game was commendable.

Scotch started the game well but were unable to convert any of their attempts at goal. Against the run of play Christ Church scored just before half time. Scotch continued to push for a goal in the second half with Lochlan Ashdown finally getting the equaliser.

The tightly contested game ended 1-0 to Christ Church, even after some late pushing by Scotch that nearly resulted in an equaliser. It wasn't our day and the game ended in defeat. Special mention to Ed who had an excellent game in defence and wasn't afraid to run as hard as he could, or get stuck in.

The 10B side drew four all with Christ Church. We were 4-1 up and the boys switch off and let them back into the game. We had our chances to snatch a win in the last few minutes of the game but alas it was not to be.

The boys showed good character and played well in the 2nd half. Structure was a bit off but the basics were done well.

In a physical game, Scotch began the better team, dominating the game from the outset. The boys were rewarded soon for their persistence, Alex Slaidins whipping in a delightful cross for Paris Young to finish with a diving header. The game remained very much in the centre of the park, with both teams fighting to win possession. The second half saw a re-energised Christ Church team come out and attack hard, but the resilience and structure of the back four kept them shot-less for 20 minutes. John Dean and Jesse Humes were brilliant, with Nick Olivares, Matthew Calvetti and Nick Steiner-Preis all putting in fantastic efforts in the backline. Scotch were soon rewarded again, again through Paris Young who spotted the keeper off his line and curled a powerful 20 metre shot around him at the near post to double the score. Scotch's hardworking midfield and defense held strong for the rest of the game, with the boys winning their first game of the season.

Scotch improved their intensity and workrate this week to be much more competitive against a strong Christ Church side. Scotch outplayed CC in the first half, with dominance all over the park. Lachlan Chapman scored Scotch's first goal of the season with a left foot chip from 18 yards finding the top corner of the net. The second half belonged to Christ Church as they changed to a more attacking formation. Christ Church scored with 15 minutes left to play, but credit to the Scotch defense and 'keeper who managed to repel any further goals. A draw was probably a fair result for this game of two halves.

What an amazing show of character from the Scotch first XI this week.

It was a fairly even contest in the first 20 minutes, with Yannick Livingstone driving a free kick high and wide from a promising position when I'm sure he would have expected to do better.

For one hour, our nine outfield players denied the CCGS team a clear goal scoring opportunity as they were limited to shots from distance which Tom Gilmore dealt with quite easily. Despite many players suffering injuries & cramp, the Scotch boys held strong & came away with a fantastic point to stay top of the league.

Once again, thanks to all the mothers who assisted with setting up morning tea and providing food, and to the fathers who assisted in marshalling the course. Without your assistance the morning would not operate so well. A huge thanks to all the runners from Years 8 and 9 who ran with the team after playing Friday afternoon sport; without your participation we would not have a team. I know many of you play another sport, either on the Saturday following your race or on the Sunday, which means you are doing seven days of sport. All you boys are of great character and commitment and I am very proud to know you. We need you each week; otherwise we will not have a team. You are all good runners and running with the team will develop you both physically and mentally and make you even better sportsmen.
