Service Activity
This week (13th - 19th May) is National Volunteers Week. Research has shown that people exposed to service when they were young were more likely to serve the community as adults.
On Friday last week the Year 10 students attended the second week of their Service Activity for Rotation 2. The boys attend the same activity for 5 weeks and then move to a different one. This gives the boys a wide range of experiences in service. Some of the boys stay on campus and work towards attaining a First Aid certificate, or help to construct wooden toys, for example. Last week two groups helped to roll Street Swags which will be donated to homeless people. Some of the off campus activities include Mimates (boys assist refugee students at Balga Senior High School to improve their English skills) and Primates Balga (boys coach and umpire sport for primary school students).
This week the Year 8 students start their second round of Clubs. One of the service clubs is Knitwits that involves knitting scarves. Although some of the boys find this activity challenging they persevere. The completed scarves are taken to Tanzania on the combined Scotch/PLC tour and donated to children in need.
Year 10 - 12 Volunteers Needed
This year is the exciting 50th celebration of the Bindaring Red Cross Clothing Sale & Auction which for over the past fifty years has raised in excess of $1.25 million for essential Red Cross crisis care services eg Support Line, Community Soup Van purchase, Save a Mate Program!
Saturday 25th May: helpers are needed to man change rooms, re-hang clothes, supervise the left-bag area, assist distributing brochures, selling raffle tickets, disassemble mirrors/trestles, etc. Students are assigned in pairs and rostered across a number of tasks. There are plenty of older volunteers to provide guidance but as it is extremely busy and students need to exercise a degree of independence and maturity. Students would be required from around 8:30 until approximately 3pm or 4pm on Saturday 25th.
Boys who are interested in volunteering for the above should see Ms Evans.
